17" Alloy wheel tyre pressures ?

Post by mikelamb » Fri Aug 29, 2008 9:10 pm

Hi All,
Can someone give me an idea on how much pressure I need in my tyres please. The tyre sizes are 225/45/17 and 215/45/17. I have just fitted the wheels and they currently have 32psi in them all. I'm guessing that this is not enough but I am unsure. All suggestions will be much appreciated.
Mike.

Those sound like low profile to me (I think my 15" are 55 in depth). Whats the load rating out of interest, as we were discussing a night or so ago on here the issue of cracking between tyre wall and tread surface on under-rated low profile tyres. At a guess, for safety, I'd suggest something high like 40psi, though if you over inflate you may start to wear the tread in the centre more than at the edges. But you don't want the wall flexing unduly and I think BigDaddyCain runs his 18" low profiles at 40psi so not far off. Lets see what others offer on here by way of advice 8)

PS - I'm currently running at 36psi rear and 34psi front on my 55 depth 17" tyres

I hope you have a 2WD, or you'll have viscous coupling problems with different size tyres on the front and back.
As Mike asks, what is the load rating? - I am unable to find tyres exceeding a load rating of 94 in either size on the mytyres website :?
Assuming that they have the correct loading of at least 92 front and 96 rear, I would guess tyres pressures of 38-40psi.

Mostly running 215/55/17 accelera tyres 98XL - currently at 40psi (max 44 on tyre) and it seems good to me, but I am no tyre expert.

Thanks for your quick reply's. The loadings are just under the correct rating although the tyres are all extra load. I am happy to use them with the correct pressures. It is a 2WD bongo, so no probs with the differant tyre sizes. I will give them a go at 38psi and see how they feel on the road.
Cheers,
Mike.
