black smoke

Hi all wondering if anyone can Help. I have just put a clean burn diesel smoke treatment solution in my bongo and now when i excellerate i have nothing but black smoke coming out. Is this normal, dont know if its meant to do that. Can anyone help

Maybe it's just cleaning the system out - it might stop in a short time

If you have used this, I am guessing you must have had a smoke problem already. Do you mean it is still smoking, or that it is now worse than it was before?

Excessive diesel smoke is due to incomplete combustion, a rich air-fuel mixture. This may be the result of problems with the fuel injector pump or its timing. It may be a clue that the air cleaner is choked. Worn or damaged fuel injectors and adulterated diesel fuel can also cause this.

Sometimes when a fuel injector fails it can leak fuel and drip. The excess fuel does not burn off and is pushed out into the exhaust where it can collect, burn and overheat the system. Often deposits left there will also glow cherry red and burn off. Black smoke is an indication that fuel is not burning properly.

The treatment is probably just doing it's job, cleaning the engine out. If you are normally fairly light footed and take it easy, carbon collects in the exhaust system, try taking it for a run and when engine is warmed up keep it in one of the lower gears so you can get the engine revs up. This should clean the system out and after a few fast bursts the smoke should stop. If it does not you may have other probs.

HI oggy,sorry to hear that you have this problem.Clean burn diesel smoke treatment should,as its says Stop the smoke not make it smoke.Was it smoking before you put the treatment in?.
Normally with modern diesel you dont require any type of additives.The oil companies spend millions improving this product,that is the reason that it is more expensive than petrol.

May be worth blanking the egr? see if it makes a difference, look in the FAQ's at the top of the forum for more info.

Hi all thanks for the advice have been to local garage today and is booked in for next week. He thinks i might have to much oil in the engine, but wont know until he has a good poke around.

Too much oil would produce blue smoke which indicates it's burning oil, instead of black smoke which is unburnt fuel.

Hi Oggy,try checking the oil level with the dip stick only takes 5 mins.
