Help quick decision required on engine
Hi
My bongo needs a new engine i have two choices
1. It is with Protech in Bristol at the moment who have quoted me £2267.50 for a new engine that is from a supplier in Japan who gives a 6 month guarantee who they have used for years with great results. The price is £1200 engine + £630 labour + £100 extras (cam belt etc).
2. Or wheelquick in Wigan £1200 engine + £100 hoses etc + £250 transport. The engine is from a crash in the UK.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
many thanks
Jeannine

Re: Help quick decision required on engine
whichever route you choose ,i would always advise that supplier fits the engine and the warranty covers parts and labour costs, there is a place in london, IEZURA,that will supply and fit with 6 months parts and labour warranty, also can transport vehicle, could be worth giving them a call for a price to compare.
Buying a second hand engine from a accident damaged is a good option as you will maybe have a little bit of history with engine.
these engines come over from japan by the container load with no real history,so in theory you are `actually testing them for the supplier, that is why i would always recomend that you have the supplier fit the engine and make sure the warranty covers the labour.
another option is having your own repaired, unless its going to be uneconomical.

Hi,sorry to hear about your problem.I dont know what vehicle you have,ie year spec etc.
It might be worth considering the value of the vehicle and what your going to spend on it,as it seems you are only getting a 6 months guarantee. Is it worth spending £2500 on a vehicle that is maybe only worth £3000 for 6 month. As I say I do not know your vehicle. It could be a matter of your heart ruling your head.
What ever you decide to do I wish you the very best of luck.
Regards Mal..

Re: Help quick decision required on engine
The price quoted by Protech seems to be for a new engine, not a crashed import, so seems about right.
If you can find out a bit about the engine from the scrapper ask on here, it wouldn't be the first time the previous owner has popped up with a full history.

Re: Help quick decision required on engine
hi. thanks for your replies if i joined the RAC could i get it recovered to manchester even though i it is already in a garage in bristol?
Mike has been brilliant at wheelquick he has an engine of a crashed bongo with a full history (it is one he originally sold). He has reserved this for me so now its just getting it up there
I do think it is worth spending it would prob cost me at least £5000 to replace it
many thanks and any more advice appreciated

Re: Help quick decision required on engine
I use a company in Bristol called ADS (on Avon Vale trading estate) - I've been really pleased with their work on my Bongo over the last few years. Just had it serviced last week and was chatting away, they now break Bongos as well as provide new.
Not suggesting your places are an issue but may be worth a call to another local garage to see what they can do.
Happy to provide all the details etc - PM me (please note I am just a happy customer, not connected withthem at all).

Re: Help quick decision required on engine
This seems a bit cheaper http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAZDA-BONGO-FRIEN ... 286.c0.m14
Re: Help quick decision required on engine
If I was fitting a brand new engine I would be fitting new cooling pipes and a new rad . This all adds up so you have to decide if it is worth spending shedloads of cash on a van which isnt worth much at the end of the day
Origo bio stove - no Bongo!
Re: Help quick decision required on engine
This looks good, and they promise to pick up the engine and replace it if there is any problem, BUT, are they going to collect it from your Bongo and pop the replacement in?manners wrote:This seems a bit cheaper http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAZDA-BONGO-FRIEN ... 286.c0.m14
Given the figures, and the fact thet Wheelquick know this engine I would probably go that route.
Saving about £700, and waranty with a company local to you, and a well respected company too.

Re: Help quick decision required on engine
PM me if you're stuck. I'm happy to give you my RAC details. If you were to break down & need recovery to Wigan, they'd do a great job.
Wheelquick is the best route to go here IMHO.

Re: Help quick decision required on engine
Thank you all so much for your support and kindness (particularly offering your RAC details). In this stressful time one good thing has been the warmth that i have received from the forum. This week my bongo has been recovered fairly cheaply (thanks to Mike at Wheelquick) to Wigan. Mike is putting a crashed engine in for me and i am relieved. Wheelquick have been so helpful too and i can now see light at the end of the tunnel
so i may see you driving around in a bongo stylee on a road near you soon
many thanks
Jeannine
