Rear axle problem

Post by al & chris » Sat Aug 09, 2008 6:30 pm

We have a loud cracking noise coming from rear axle. It seems to be worse when going round corners. It came on suddenly any ideas as to what it might be?

Is it a limited slip diff? sounds like it's breaking up. :(

See if there is a yellow sticker on the diff casing.... It may be hard to make out if the bongo has been waxoiled. Yellow sticker= LSD.

The LSD allows the torque to go to the opposite wheel if stuck in mud/ice. There are friction plates inside which can break on some diffs (haven't heard of it happen on a Bongo though).........

Garage Says it looks like rear diff is breaking up. Where can we get a reaplacement diff /rear axil from. Garage says as long as ratios are the same it does not matter if it is LSD or non LSD.
Is that correct.

LSD is handy but either will do. It makes the 4WD work better if you have a front and rear wheel on mud/ice

Hello Al & Chris.

Can I ask - did the garage source the replacement axle for you, or did you have to do it?

What sort of cost was the whole job? And, where it the garage located?!

As you might guess, I have a whining rear axle - 2WD model - which needs sorting, so I'm looking for as much advice as possible!

Thanks.

(I think I'll post this as a new topic too - I hope that's ok?)
