Re: Stalling when hot
nope, problem still there.
Have just replaced the fuel filter, and cleaned out the wee gauze one (FACT SHEET is incorrect, it says the bolt head is 15mm , on my freda it is 14mm, not a big deal)
Seems fine (again), but only time and a good long drive will really tell.
Just updating this in case anybody else has the same or similar issues

Partial blockage of fuel tank vent? Try running when hot with cap off.Stew wrote:nope, problem still there.

Re: Stalling when hot
well, drove for about 10 miles, thought I had cracked it, then the bstd thing stalled, at around 20 miles per hour while slowing down. Drove all the way home with no problems, other than concern.
It stalls once in a while, when hot, how mad is that. I dunno what else to try now, so it looks like the Bongo is going on a sorn

Re: Stalling when hot
It may be worth getting a cylinder pressure test when the engine is hot to see if you have worn pistons, liners or rings, or even valves - this is always worse when the engine is hot.

Re: Stalling when hot
I mentioned in an earlier post that I didn't think it was a fuel filtraton problem Stew. Have you checked the fuel shutoff solenoid on the pump?

Hi Stew,
If yours is a diesel bongo and you think its a fuel problem the best guys are gee-diesels(think may be spelt wrong) in hucknall 1 minute from the fire station on the industrial estate around the back of it.
Hope this helps and dont sorn the bongo yet

Re: Stalling when hot
Just checked, and yes 14mm is the one you need, I must of managed mine with a 15mm (six sided socket) as It will do the job, it's just a weeee bit of a loose fit. ( just a bit of useless information.Stew wrote:(FACT SHEET is incorrect, it says the bolt head is 15mm , on my freda it is 14mm, not a big deal)

Re: Stalling when hot
just a quick update. Garage has had it for a week now, and they are at their wits end trying to figure out what the problem could be.
Anybody want to buy a rather large green bongo shaped paperweight, theres a lot of metal in a bongo, so at least I'll get a few quid for scrap for it.
Bongo's , wish I'd never heard of the things, I'm gutted.

Re: Stalling when hot
after having a replacement engine i found that after going over bumps or right hand turns my engine would stall , it turned out to be the fuel solenoid live wire had a break in it, replaced wire from terminal to solenoid problem solved. hope this is of help, maybe worth investigating.

Re: Stalling when hot
Hi Stew,
Do you have a TM2 temp gauge? because my temp always shoots up when I slow down from a fast run, as much as 15C, and it keeps climbing if the engine stops. A possible explanation is an overtemp reaction. Lots of things come to mind, like fuel boiling, binding due to tight fit components, oil thinning etc. it may be a combination of issues, but it sure sounds like fuel starvation, as there is not much more to diesels other than compression, oxygen and timing. Can you smell unburnt fuel at the exhaust when the problem occurs? if so perhaps there is a compression problem - sticking valves or back pressure - no oxygen? Do you have the cold climate exhaust valve that could be playing up?
Run the overheating idea past your mechanic, he/she might think of something new.

Re: Stalling when hot
got the thing back from the garage this evening. I don't know what they did this week, as my wife picked it up, and they just said try it now.
Went for a drive tonight, exactly the same drive as I did last time it stalled, and , yes, fkn thing stalled within 500 yards of the last time.
Now , I am not a mechanic, the garage guys are, and they are baffled now. I will speak to them tomorrow, because I am flaming raging that they had it 2 weeks and it is in exactly the same state as when I left it there.
engine is up to normal working temperature...
It only cuts out when you are off of the throttle for a length of time, and especially if you have been driving fast beforehand. Example. drive along at 70 for a few miles, then come to a big downhill in a 30 limit. Slow down to 30 in the bongo, roll down the hill, you won't touch the throttle.
That is when it stalls.
It takes a while to start, then it starts, and is fine for a random amount of time from then on.
It is as though the tickover needs to be turned up a wee bit, thats the only way I can describe it.
Oh, and it also felt really gutless going up hills this evening, but that is probably just because I have hardly even driven the flaming thing for the past few months, and can't remember what the performance is like any more.
On holiday as well this week, we were going to go away in the thing, but thats not gonna happen now.
Most expensive vehicle I've ever bought, never had so much grief from any other vehicle. I am absolutely gutted, we haven't had one night in it this year.

Re: Stalling when hot
hi stew, sorry to hear of your woes,i have had shedloads of grief with my motor and we have nearly parted company more than once,as well as all i have already done(drop links, full exhaust, egr valves, glowplugs, door wiring, coolant probs, and last but not least secondhand autobox,) and possibly more forgotten last three weekends we managed to get out in the bongo and use it for what we got it for and its worth all the hassle,i too suffer the same as you funnily enough always it stalls just as i get to were im going and we manage, for the month of august i have sworn to do no fixing but i will start in september with the pump seals,do you smell diesel on the drivers side mate? could be a diy fix with dandy whorhols pump seal post, sorry to go on but you need to see the light at the end of the tunnel !!! it is there, keep banging the rocks together and good luck....
Re: Stalling when hot
ok, update...
electric fuel pump fitted (primes the system)
hoses replaced
hoses rerouted in case gravity is at fault.
EGR blanked off.
Done 14 miles with no stalls.
Just grabbing some sustenance then I'm off out driving it for another while, see what happens.
