right wheel and tyres
Hi can some one please help i have this morning gone to have my tyres changes and came home in tears!!!!!!!!!!!! aparently i am braking the law and its a mot fail i have 225/50/r16 a bmw tyre aaprently, please can any one advice as to what i should have i hope me alloys are ok as well if not tell us as well
Re: right wheel and tyres
Breaking the law? I think someone is unnecessarily putting the fear of God into you. I don't see how you can be breaking the law unless the tyres are catching the suspension or bodywork or the tyres themselves are unfit ie. below the minimum tread depth or incorrect 'H' rating.
Check out the "Wheels" section for advice on sizes etc. Obviously your alloys are aftermarket and not standard so I can't really comment on what tyres you should put on. Do a search on here and see if you can find if someone has fitted the same wheels as you and what tyres they have fitted. Alternatively go back to the MOT testing station and ask if they are capable of telling you what constitutes 'illegal' and what they would recommend you do to make them legal.

Re: right wheel and tyres
Your tyres are 4.4% too small, but that's not illegal - it just means you're not travelling as fast as your speedo says and using more fuel.
I suspect that they are not of the correct load. After the 225/50x16 on the tyre, there should be a number and a letter e.g. 94H - your front tyres should have a number of at least 92 and the rear tyres 96.

That's what I meant to say John but couldn't quite remember the detail. It must be great to have a memory94H - your front tyres should have a number of at least 92 and the rear tyres 96.

Re: right wheel and tyres
Thanks for that lol mine have all got 92v on them ??? i have found some that are 195/70/15 would they be any better or can some one tell me what they have on there bongo would be well up for saving fuel on bongo lol cheers
Re: right wheel and tyres

The important bit isn't the ???/?? - 16 bit at the front it's the 2 or maybe 3 digits at the end that are combined with a letter.
The letter must be "H" or upwards and the digits must be no lower than 92 on the front axle and 96 on the rear axle.
Those digits are the "Load index" and they show what load the tyre can carry if that is too.
Re: right wheel and tyres
so 92v is alright then as its higher so now i really confused (which doesnt take much and i am not blonde lol) i have on the front and back at present 225/55/r16 so if i went to buy 215/55/r16 tommorow that would be ok then as long as the numbers after that are higher then "h" and then 195/75/16 for the front im even and might see betta performence with me car oh this is getting complex now i just want the right tyres on me bongo any help would be really appriciated thanks Emma

The 195/75x16 that you mention are 7% bigger than the ones you have at the moment - if your Bongo is 4WD, it would cause massive damage if you fitted them

215/55x16 is 1.7 % smaller than the ones you have at the moment (IF they are 225/55x16), so will result in more fuel being used.

Higher than what?
V is higher than H but 92 isn't high enough for the rear axle.
All the fitter needs to know is -
The speed rating letter has to be "H" or Higher.
The load index number has to be 92 or Higher on the Front and 96 or higher on the Rear.
Re: right wheel and tyres
Right thanks for all the advice i know what i gotta do now go to the garage and i cant be fobed off lol the tyres are what i origanally said lol i gotta remember the number bit lol ttfn thanks very much
Re: right wheel and tyres
And if it's 4 wheel drive the circumferences of the tyres on the front and rear axles have to be within 2% of each other.scanner wrote:spicedwomen wrote:so 92v is alright then as its higher so now i really confused (which doesnt take much and i am not blonde lol) i have on the front and back at present 225/55/r16 so if i went to buy 215/55/r16 tommorow that would be ok then as long as the numbers after that are higher then "h" and then 195/75/16 for the front im even and might see betta performence with me car oh this is getting complex now i just want the right tyres on me bongo any help would be really appriciated thanks Emma

The standard sizes are (or should be) shown on a plate inside the driver's door opening - any good tyre depot worth it's salt should be able to advise from that the best size(s) for 16" wheels - I've found 215/60 - 16 all round to be spot on.

Take special note of the above Emma...Or you will face a bigger bill than just new tyres! Best of luck.scanner wrote:

Re: right wheel and tyres
Well I have got all round.. 215..65..15's which are 96H rated, they cost £42.00 fitted and are Nangkang make. Have been on for two years now no probs and still loads of life in em. Shop around in case this particular garage is trying to "take you for a ride".
