engine compatible with ford ranger or mazda b2500?

Post by patjunfa » Tue Jul 29, 2008 10:57 am

Hi All

I'm still in the process of replacing the engine on my Bongo, 96 model. Is the engine compatible with the ford ranger or mazda b2500? The mechanic says the code is WL which is the same engine so it should be an exact match. I thought it was wlt tho. A few people made some comments in an earlier thread about this, saying poss the same, and the ranger came out in 98 so poss the same as l8r models of bongos. Some one else said they think the ranger has less horsepower? I'm tryin to get more clear on this as it'd b easier to search for more familiar vechicles. The mechanic said if the code is the same its clear cut.

Thanks

WL is non turbo WLT is with turbo.

Not totally sure, but the only significant difference may be the combustion chamber volume as non turbo engines usually have a slightly higher compression ratio to make up for not having the extra air pressure from the turbo.

If you tried using a non-turbo head on a turbo engine you may have head gasket problems from the extra combustion pressure.

It could also be that if the combustion chamber is mainly in the piston crown - common with diesels - it could just be the pistons that vary.

I am with Scanner on this one, I have been looking at engines to learn a bit about Bongos and most Ranger and B2500's are non turbo, and the engines certainly look different

Have you got a budget for a second hand Engine, as I know where there could be on for sale....

The engines should be basically the same if they are WL's but have a Turbo and different compression ratio etc if WL-T's

hmm thanks for the responses.
I can understand the that wl and wlt and the lack of turbo in that would make for different engines. Though if I get a wl-t engine, surely it will b identical? Its a big purchase so i need to find out for sure. Does anyone know of a source I could check to get an official word, or maybe I should narrow my search to bongo engines to be safe.

Thanks
