Wheel Nut Covers

Not sure if this is really the right place to post this, but it certainly caused me a techie problem on Saturday :( To cut a short story even shorter, I had cause to remove the wheels to check the brake pads on Saturday. Even with the extending wheel nut wrench I had in the Bongo though, a few of the wheel nuts defeated me, necessitating a quick trip to the friendly local garage for a proper wrench (I was visiting my mother, so my main tools weren't available). Anyway, the problem is that the nut's on my Mazda alloys were well rusted on & I didn't have a hope of shifting them without a proper socket/extension bar combination. I'll partially rectify this at the weekend with copper grease, & will add a regular nut removal session onto my maintenance schedule, but I was thinking that a better solution would be some wheel nut covers, to keep the grease in & the crap out - I can find them for 17mm & 19mm nuts, or above 38mm (lorries) but I'm damned if I can find any for the Bongos 21mm nuts :x Has anyone else found a source of these? Or another solution?

wheel nut covers will make no difference just remove them all, copper eaze the threads and replace with proper torque settings.

water cannot get down the threads.

They were stuck as the metal to metal contact was dry and they have bonded over a long time. copper eaze will cure that problem for you.

I take the point, but having caps would help keep the exposed portion of stud thread greased & un-corroded, making roadside removal that bit easier. You don't happen to know the correct torque do you? Still waiting for spare funds to purchase the manual I'm afraid :wink:

Sorry I've no idea re torque settings
I've always done it by feel using a wheel 'spyder' to my version of tight plus a half turn!
no help to you sorry!

try these nuts with a 'filled' end I paid about £15 a set off ebay inc delivery
suitable for alloys or steels genuine Mazda chromed wheel nuts

I've never had a wheel fall off either but have had them come loose after letting the local car tyre centre fit my new wheels.
So much for professionals ( 16yr olds with airtools) eh!

The Bongo Friendee Service Manual gives the Wheel Nut tightening torque as between 12 and 15 Kg/m.

Thanks for the specs Mountaingoat. I've also always relied on "feel" up to now, though the torque wrench gets used for most things on the bike!

I also checked the Transits at work today, which have 21mm wheelnuts & covers, so a breakers is another option. All depends which I get around to first!
