My Air Con is Naff

Post by thedogsbollox » Sat Jul 26, 2008 8:35 pm

After suffering the last 2 days in baking sunshine, i need to get my aircon sorted. It used to be real good but lately it does not seem to have any uumph. I have heard that Halfords will re-charge it for about £40. Would this be my first option or are there any other things i should look at first?

Mine wasn't working good also, I had a mobile air-con man to check it over, all it needed was re-gassing. Cost £40.

Check out kwik fit, they had an offer of fixing it for £25.00 or no charge if no luck.,

You can get kits to do your own. I've never tried them, but others on here have with, I believe, mixed success.

The trouble is with diy is that you don't know how much gas you have in the system to start with. A can of gas will cost you about £25 if memory serves and you would probably need two to fill the Bongo. For the same price you can have your system checked, evacuated and refilled to the correct weight of gas, for the same price by an expert (I use the term loosely when including Halfrauds etc).

Thanks for that, i think i will leave it to the experts. Now when the expert asks, "A Bongo what?" Where should i point him to find the place to fill it?

my "expert" had problems here!!! one port is obvious, infront of the radiator, the other less so but obvious once sighted it is behind the radiator

Hmm going to have to show my ignorance here. The High pressure valve is located just in front of the rad (light blue cap) but I'm pretty sure you need to fill from the low pressure valve. Which is hidden somewhere behind the rad. I dunno, it's been a while since I touched aircon. Hopefully someone will correct me on this and point out which one it is filled from.

Hello guys , long time no post.

My aircon is f***ed to. My air con man is on holiday but suggested Kwik fit for a Kwik fix.

But lot's of the usual head scratching, shrug of shoulders and " can't do it co's the specs are not on the system mate"!

They want to know gas weight and oil mix so they can press buttons on the computer

My aircon bloke takes an hour to do the job. He pumps out the old gas weighs it then pumps in fresh gas with a little bit more to fill the vacuum after testing the system for leaks.
Can Kwik Fix do that? "Nah, we need the specs mate"

The last time I had it done was 3 years ago so I ain't done to bad...pitty it's packed up co's "It aint half hot mum"!!

You can DIY fill quite easily, but if you can get someone to do it for around £40 its not worth the hassle.
I just put a bongo on the road that hadnt been used for 6 mths - air con not working. I did buy one of the fill up kits a while back that have a guage on and the refil cans are about £11 so not too bad - however I used one and it worked for a week. Then tried a small can of air con sealer plus another can of refil - now working OK - cost around £30 plus an hour faffing around trying not to get frost bite  .
PS the low pressure valve is the one behind the rad quite low down - cap should have an 'L' on it.
