Cheaper roofbars than Keefysher's ;)

Post by missfixit70 » Wed Jul 23, 2008 10:02 pm

After seeing Keefy's adapted Thule roofbars, I got to thinking whether or not my cheap old paddy Hopkirk gutterless bars would fit :-k

Image

They do :D I just took off the gutterless clamp bit, it already had a rubber foot, I just needed to drill out one of the slots a bit bigger & take the hole through the rubber foot, I'd got some M8 (edited) x16mm stainless allen bolts, but only a couple of threads were grabbing properly, so I think it could do with 20mm bolts. the bars were extended to the maximum length & they fitted just right :D

The top bar is before, the bottom one with the clamp removed.
I don't know if I'll actually use them, but at least I know it can be done :D

You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Ok I meant M8 bolts, the thickness of the feet on the PH bars is thicker than the Thule ones obviously, & will need 20mm bolts, as I couldn't get it on at all with a washer. I haven't left the bars on, as I wasn't happy with the amount of thread grabbing in the nut & I don't need them on at the mo anyway, was just playing while I had the tools out.
Cost me about 40p for the bolts, so if i have to buy another 4 20mm bolts, it'll probably be 80p altogether if you're looking at it in those terms. I was looking at it on the basis of buying from new Keith, just to show people you don't have to spend a fortune, or a pair of roofbars laying round in the garage or a pair from a car boot could easily be adapted to fit
Yep I took inspiration from yours, I was just putting the idea out there  I like a laugh but getting tired of the put downs now Kieth
