Engine WLT or RF?
Hi All
I'm searching for a replacement engine for my bongo. Its a 96. How do I know if its a WLT or a RF (think thats what the mechanic asked)engine? There are some available affordably on Ebay, are the any other spec's I should know to ensure I get the right engine?
Of two sellers, One "guarentees" the engines have only 30.000 miles and are subjected to a whole load of tests, all sounds good, but they are only ebay memebers since last june, which makes me wary,
The other crew are members for 4 years so lots of feedback on them, but they say they can't say how many miles the engine has on it, only that they are from dismantled vechiles from Japan. Prob go with them tho
Thanks for any help

Aren't WL-Ts the Turbo diesels and RFs the petrols?
Re: Engine WLT or RF?
if its the firm in kent that is guaranteeing the ngines be careful,we had a mechanic go to their place to see what checks they actually do,only to be told the checks are actually carried out in japan before ship ment,he also saw pallet loads of engines stacked high, all full of oil and dirt, then someone was employed to steam clean them off ready for shipment,if these engines had all the checks done beforehand i'm sure they would have been steam cleaned aswell, also they couldn't offer any paperwork guaranteeing the milage, besides what they write them selves.
there is a place advertises on ebay that will give you a 6 months parts warranty.

There's a place near Heathrow that you should steer clear of too.

Patjunfa - buying a replacement engine is certainly a case of buyer beware - try some of the breakers who have ad`s on this site - or see who comes recommended by any other members who have had new engines.

If I had all the money I ever spent on my Freda ............ I`d spend it on my Freda.
Re: Engine WLT or RF?
the place i have used in the past, will fit the engines for around £200 extra, and you still get the 6 months parts plus labour warranty,so i let them fit the engines for peace of mind if anything goes wrong,i beleive these engines come over by the container load, steam cleaned off then advertised as good engines,so buying one you are in fact testing them for the supplier at your expense of fitting and refitting if any problems later, the supplier will say its fitters fault and vise versa,so by letting them sfit and supply the labour warranty its down to them.
I ,and a few others had a bad batch of engines fitted in 3 different vehicles,2 failed after 6 weeks and another after 3 months, then out of the 3 replacements 2 more failed, all within warranty period luckily,so that was 5 out of 6 engines, all with cylinder head problems, common fault on a particular engine we had fitted, luckily, the ones i had fitted by the supplier, so the labour costs was covered, this was last year, and since then i know of others who had engines from the same supplier and had no problems at all.
it is a bit of a lottery buying second hand imported engines with no history,so my veiw is let supplier fit it for you and let them cover the labour costs if needed.
make sure you definetly need a new engine, and not just the head replaced on your own, fixing your own engine could be a better option than buying another with unknown faults.

I live in Ireland, so am probably going to have to get one shipped.
Mazda dealers sell em new for €12500, so obviously need to check 2nd hand. The gaskit and the cylinder head are cracked.

these folk "Izeura" gaurentee the engine for 6 months. 6 months is no time really but probably as much of a gaurentte as you'll get.
~Anyone any other ideas of where to look?
Thanks

Hi I think I would go with the imported dealer, I've read that at home (Japan) they don't do much in the way of motoring it's likely that the imported units are low in mileage/Ks,I bought an exhust system from izeura and was very happy with the deal, just a thought hope it helps

IZEURA is the place i use,not many others will give you a 6 months warranty on second and parts, thats why i go with them, dont take this as a recomendation please,i only use them for conveinience along with the price/warranty.
If you know your bottom end is ok ,i would replace the head and gasket, less work and at least you know it is going to last ,i would steer clear of the cheap chinese copy heads, and use a genuine head gasket though.
There are some decent copy heads about but some really bad ones, mainly chinese copies, badly copied and poor quality aliminium.
