I have been thinking about a cheaper alternative to the piece of equipment that I borrowed. I wonder if a modified expansion cap could be fitted with a neoprene hose and using a garden spray type pressurised container, the coolant could be pumped into the system ? It would have to be a minimum 10 litre container to deliver the correct amount of pre-mixed coolant

From your description of your method and the time taken, it sounds as though you did not get the thermostat to open during the bleeding (bottom hose hot). Does getting pressure into the system make this unnecessary ?? If this is the case, a easy way to pressurize the system is to ge a old (or new) "high pressure innertube off a bike, remove the valve, this will now screw nicely into the header tank overflow outlet. Then, useing a pump you can get it up to any pressure you want. When finished take the valve out and all is back to normal.

Sounds good Haydn I think the thermostat allows the coolant and air through the small jiggle hole.

Some after market stats do not have a jiggle pin/hole. This could be a problem if you are not aware of the type of stat fitted.

I am here, Oh Legless One. Brainbox is surprisingly empty on this one though as I can't get my head around it. I'd love bleeding to be painless but need to be confident that the chosen method works and doesn't cost £70 for a once every 2 years (if I'm a good boy) job. Last time I did it, it came out fine and my only note to self was get someone (Will) to top up coolant while I attended to the bleed pipe. I nearly had a coronary running to and fro from header tank to bleed pipe last time, trying to make sure coolant level didn't drop too low

Mike this method is much more relaxed I did it single handed £70.00 if shared between members would be peanuts

Having reread your method..I carn't get my head round the fact that putting a bit of pressure into the header tank will make any differance to the normal bleeding process. I can understand that creating a vacuum would have a effect but not pressure.
What is the science behind the idea.
I could be being a bit thick here.

Haydn I pumped the coolant through the system, It worked, not sure of the science- vacuum pulls the coolant, pumping pushes the coolant.

I wish I could put it across like Haydn does. I think that is what's bothering me. But you are right Pete. Bongoing is a hobby and making DIY servicing fun is worthy of a little outlay. Maybe its the sense of having mastered a dark art that makes me want to persevere with the old traditional method. A kind of 'unplugged gig' for Bongo servicing fanatics.

Pete...don't get me wrong .. I expect all is now well..however (there is always a "however" with me) I would like to know that since you did the work the Stat has opened and the bottom hose has got HOT. If this has happened without having to top up much then I'm convinced. If this hasn't happened then I would be super careful and watch the temp like a hawk.
