Fuel gauge broken....

Post by dr.p » Mon Jul 07, 2008 10:10 am

our fuel gauge dropped rapidly from full to empty...took about 10 mins. Then after a while recovered to show correct reading.

Has now died permanently i think.

Anyone know how easy it is to check for possible cause and where to start.

thanks,
dr.p

you should find lots of info regarding bad earth issues at the sender if you do a search

Could be the dodgy earth from the sender, seems to be a common problem although I've not had it myself, under this plate

apparantly remaking a decent earth sorts it out. It's underneath where the middle seat should be (mines reversed).

You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

thanks for feedback, gauge recovered today so does seem to make sense.... dodgy connection.
unfortunately it's a fully converted van with floor over sender hatch, but i'm pretty sure it can be accessed still.

I had exactly the same symtoms at the weekend. In my case I only had to clean the connector on the sender unit with switch cleaner to restore normal working.

One tip tho..drill another hole. clean to bare metal and make another second earth as a back up just in case, I did no more trouble since lol. Easy to do. must be cause I did it.
