is the gearbox oil air cooled?

Post by bongomaan » Sun Jun 29, 2008 2:19 pm

me again,is the aft fluid cooled my" personal nightmare" will not change out of second gear so i took a sample from one of the two pipes coming out of the auto box to the rad (i suspect) and it is like mud so new fluid and filter clean no problem but what i dont understand is it is nice and clean and red offa the dipstick ! thanks for any responses and the encouragement to continue and not drive the bloody thing into a hole in the ground...viva la fury.. ps i assume that the filter is accessed by removing the sump, cheers neil.

well i replaced atf and its still going into safety mode and the hole in the ground is looking even more tempting, but being positive (as you do !) i noticed that the garage i paid to service my van didnt change the oil filter (cant trust the dratsrabs) so maybe an oil and filters change tomorrow will do the trick.in the meantime i have disconnected the battery to reset the brain,i will do the oil thing tomorrow and if that doesnt work its off to the gearbox specialist i go .anybody got any ideas why the bleeding thing wont go out of second gear, tps maybe, wire from cpu to autobox, or something nasty and expensive in the box ahhhh keep the faith, neil..ps cheers doone

replaced the oil and the filters still no joy,it still goes into safe mode.why am i not getting a fault code ? if it was a gearbox thing surely the hold light would flash as per boro,s post i dont want to pay to have it diagnosed for nothing, does a faulty tps give a fault code,i will get a multimeter and test it asap (cheers corblimey ) after that im out of ideas, apart from the wire that goes from the cpu to the gearbox but am unsure how to test it,which pin to test on the cpu side ??????? if anyone knows you could save my sanity !!

I fear its time to see the specialist. Could madmile direct you to one in your area? Bummer I know but maybe just maybe (esp. if recommended by madmile and they are 'on side') they'll spot that it's something simple.

Good luck and keep us posted [-o<

If it isn't going past second I'm not sure if the hold light will show it up :?

Here's some pins to check:

1E - line pressure solenoid valve, ignition on, throttle off, approx 1.7volts. Throttle on, below 1 volt

1F - shiftA solenoid valve, measure when driving, 1st gear, battery voltage (V). 2nd/3rd gear, below 1v.

1H - shiftB solenoid valve, ignition on, shift in P, R, N, 1 OR 2, battery v. Shift in 3 or lockup, below 1 volt. (Driving I expect)

Are you sure it isn't going up to 3rd? If it is you could check the fluid temperature sensor, pin 2J. When the oil temp is 40deg.C there's approx 1.1 volts, at 80 deg.C approx. 0.4v. That would stop the box going further than 3rd.

There's another check at 1G. Dropping register control signal - ign. on, throttle off, approx 5.7v. - throttle on, below 1v. i don't know what that signal is - it may be lost in translation

Best of luck.................

ok went to "transmission specialist " who connected his box of tricks to the autobox plug, told me that he was getting no fault codes therefore the clutches are burnt out and after rubbing his chin for a bit gave me a off the top of his head quote of £1700 of and of course theres the vat ! he then took me to his bench were as luck would have it he happened to have a burnt out clutch assembly. so the qqqqqqqquestions are 1 why did he say he had no fault codes, 2 why were solenoids not mentioned, 3 why still do i have no hold light flashing, 4 why do people think im so gullable (see i cant even spell it !). the only thing i did learn is that the box is a jatco r4a-el and i only believe this cos i read it in his catalog (what he called his bible ). total result nothing so i am considering taking it over to bell hill after talking to tom in the morning . but on the plus side i found some Japanese chewing gum wedged behind the glove box.....
