Gearbox problems

Post by pariskyle » Mon Jun 16, 2008 8:27 pm

I have recently acquired an automatic bongo (privately) Fairly soon I noticed the gear slipping in top gear and behaving erratically. A gearbox secialist diagnosed the torque converter which I replaced, still the same problem. I have since noticed that when i engage the hold button it is fine and will operate ok in gears up to 3rd (ie if I hold in 3rd everything is ok). Recently the hold light has come on when I start up, only sometimes. When this happens the gear box does not have these problems and stays in top fine. Only problem is it won't kick down when I need to accelerate hard. The gears will adjust when I reduce speed normally. Once the light flashes it will behave like this for the whole journey. If I stop and start it is just as likely to stop flashing and go back to behaving erratically in top gear. And finally the last time the light flashed the speedo did not work. This was a one off and the speedo has worked fine since. Read something similar posted on the site...help!! (Dave from Lichfield)

Hi Dave - welcome to the madhouse :D
Make sure to put your location in your profile - it helps local folks to help you in the future.
I'm no gearbox expert, but there always seems to be a lot of problems if you have a chip on your speedo - you have one if your odometer reads in miles instead of kilometres. The chips seem to cause all sorts of signal problems to the speedo/gearbox.
There are several on here who know a lot about the gearboxes - they'll be along before very long - good luck 8)

Hi Dave,
If you are a paid up member have a look in the members area where you will find a fact sheet which tells you how to read the blink code and what it means. The code should give you some idea of where the fault lies. If speedo has been playing up look there first. As francophile1947 says, converter chips are known to cause problems. The gearbox ECu uses a speed signal which it shares with the speedo, sometimes a loose or missing screw on the back of the speedo itself has been known to cause problems.

Hi Dave, i do hope its something daft like the speedo chip that is the cause of your problems... I take it your gearbox chap checked the fundamentals dave? Fluid level/colour? Hopefully he replaced it as a matter of course...

You will notice when you check the hold light flashing sequence, the timing of the flashes denotes a code, which can be checked against the list (in the members section)to point you in the direction of the problem...

Good luck.
