Our bongo nighmare

Post by Manie » Sun Jun 08, 2008 12:36 pm

Bought our bongo 2 months ago 4wd P plate 97 .12month mot 6 months tax £4950 We went on our first trip out to margate on the way there it kept over reving as if it could not go into gear ?? Loosing power .So we kept pulling over waiting for a few minute then starting off again for a few miles .
On the way home horible smell of burning rubber ,plus the same thing was happening to gearbox. Pulled over again called rac he said to just get our bongo home and to a garage. Also noticed oil on the drive. Took our Bongo to lakeside garage who said the aircon belt had come loose they tightened it and it started burning again .(The aircopresser had siezed) They disconected it.They said we had to get a new one (£1600 for the new part) . They toped up gearbox oil a tighted clips ect and said the gear box was fine That cost £70 They also said we should get a fog light put in as would not go through mot??We took the willimeener bongo out for a long run again the same thing started happening we were so gutted . I managed to get an air conpresser from a breakers for £220. Lakeside are fitting this on tue £90 plus £65 for re gasing. Also they are giong to fix anti roll bar and oil leak and to fix gearbox .
Has anyone got any ideas on gearbox ???
Thanks Manda & Jane
We are hope will all be fixed as we are booked in for our first Bongo Bash.

The throttle position sensor may need adjustment, the gearbox relies on this to know when to change gear etc... It could simply be a bit loose? If you look under the drivers seat, its a black plastic thing with some numbers on it. (466 i think).

Mine was also revving and reluctant to change up. Before making any adjustments check first the small gauze filter underneath the banjo bolt on the fuel pump. This was blocked on mine and once cleared it ran better than ever. I think that if the fuel line is rectricted then you have to press the throttle further to get the required amount of fuel to the engine. I think that this must fox the gearbox into refusing to change up. Since it is the cheapest I would check that first.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you are having problems.

All I can suggest is you give Fred a ring at Discount trucks, he's very knowledgeable with Bongo's and has helped me out 3 times now, all of which were unusual problems. OK it's a few miles to Newbury, but I can assure you he's very good, and the labour rate there is much less so overall I've always been glad of Freds help. He doesn't change things unless they are needed, and sometimes he does an "A Team" and makes up an usual bit on the spot.

Anyway, I'm sure it's all fixable, and you'll appreciate it more when it's all over.

Good luck and I hope you get it all sorted soon.

I would be asking the seller how it got it's 12month MOT if it didn't have a fog light fitted?

That would also be ringing other alarm bells as well.

Was it from a dealer? or a private sale?

Does the hold light (top right hand side in instrument cluster) flash when it wont change up? If so it will have saved a fault code which you can read; instructions in a fact sheet in the members area. Good luck.
