How deep can we go?

Post by Noggin the Nog » Thu Jun 05, 2008 2:33 pm

With all the flooded water of the past few days I have been wondering how deep can we go in our Bongo's?

I went down one flooded lane and passed easily through 15 - 20 inches. The air intake is quite high in the front grill area so no probs there. How deep have others been?

:D
Somewhere out there, up a misty montain is what I have been looking for, one day I shall find it..........untill then I will use a pry bar and 2lb hammer!

Just getting the tape measure out, i found myself down a lane near Bristol a few months back which was so heavily flooded even the big boys 4x4's didn't want to chance it..
It could have been 23" at the deepest. i don't know??
I felt like the Titanic but carried on..
Though i was crawling through the flood the wash looked as if it was covering the lights at one point, the road inclined back up & i got out no problem.

I did however lose a wheel trim & the inter cooler air scoop (which is as its name suggests is not for scooping heavy volumes of water) was torn off.
I managed to source a replacement scoop, the original being twisted beyond repair..!

My mate on the other hand was in a Citroen estate following a few minutes later, wrote his off he reckoned 6 inches of water was in the car when they pulled him out!!

I'm also reliably informed Badgers don't do air scoops any favours either.

I had a Citroen XM years back. Had to shift it one day during heavy rain as it was parked near a partially blocked drain and with the suspension in the down position it was close to filling up.

Have had another look at the air intake system and although the open end is high enough at the front it does drop down before it raises up to the air filter. A good inspection of this plastic piping might be advisable to check for splits and holes etc. If this is OK I reckon our bongos should get through anything the 4x4 brigade can. It might be as well to go slowly through the water so as not to remove other bits of "trim" below like the plastic underengine shield etc. Do we all agree? :D

When traversing deep water, it's adviseable to match the speed of the bow wave as closely as possible, this helps to keep the exhaust tip in the same area as the "wake" too.

I would take the max depth of water you can traverse is below the base of the alternator bracket or you are going to short out the electrics if the alternator is submerged, this is a good few inches/mm below the height of the air inlet under the bonnet.

Oh yeah, the Badger will trade it's life for the damage caused..
A friend of mine had an RS2000 written off once by Bill Odie's best mate.
