Oil 10w 40?

Oil 10w 40?
I followed the instructions from the website and sent the wife to buy some diesel oil. I gave her instructions to buy 10w 30 and she came back with castrol gtx 10w 40. Can I use it or do I need to send her back to get the right stuff?

No problem if it's the GTX for diesel engines (assuming yours is a diesel).

just a point i noticed when i ran mine on 10 40, my fuel consumption went up. might just be me but at a guess putting thicker oil in would cause more friction so therefore increased fuel to overcome. it was just when i got it thou and i was monitering mpg.
went from 27mpg down to 21mpg and the only thing i had done was the oil.

thats the only change id made, i gave it a service but used the wrong grade of oil.dropped it out and put in the right grade.
im not the only one who has noticed a difference.
i didnt change my driving style or anything else john.

I'm going to get some 10W/30 in - I should be able to beat Torchwood then, without all the pussy-footing and folding the mirrors in.

must remember to get cruise control sorted out ,oh and remove the conversion i did in the back, im sure we can make do just with a sleeping bag chucked on the floor. if i get rid of the 4wd system and lop off the roof then im sure i can get the ful cons better.
seriously tho its rare i get 30mpg but i can notice a big drop from 27 down to 21. this was before i did a few other alterations to the bongo.
i might be tempted to try the 10 40 again as my transit van takes that also so could buy a bulk batch.
i think my last oilchange i put 5 30 in so its thin as can be.have put in some additive thats supposed to reduce friction within the engine but ive gone past bothering to monitor the mpg. cant keep track of the price changes every day to calculate it correctly. rant over.

It was meant seriously, I can see that the hot viscosity must affect the running of the engine and all engines are different. Last one was south of Ipswich on the A.12 to near Huntingdon on a near empty A.14 (WOW that's a first) last Sunday - at an indicated 70mph (true 66 - by GPS) nearly all the way - 29.6mpg.
I'll try 10W/30 and see what changes.

than folding back the wing mirrors whilst driving

I don't fold mine back, but they are not a legal requirement SFAIK.

You are probably correct scanner, but I use my wing mirrors constantly, we have lots of motorcyclists in our area, I like to give them a fair chance to overtake

it would be interesting to see if there is any results. i havnt changed mine and its about due. ive now got the k+n filter in, just a rule of thumb on a regular basis get around 330 miles out of a tankful, thats town pottering and long haul loaded up with trailer up down hills.
on long trips i get bout 28.
anyway this is diverting off the topic slightly.
i think that engines vary between one another for the oil some are tight and some slack with a bit of wear.
keep track if you do change the oil. i would be interested and i will also do the same, once i can afford to fill the bongo to the brim
i dont have a rear view mirror on my transit. minst you i cant see out of the back, nor are they electrically folding. oh and i dont pay for the fuel for that one.boss does.
note to self put big tank under transit so can syphon off fuel for bongo.cant be blatent as i used to be. used to fill containers up when boss out. hes gone and put cctv up now covering the fuel tank.
