Car key blanks

Post by trevorjtaylor » Sat May 31, 2008 7:11 pm

I only got one ignition key with my Ford Freda. I've been to 4 locksmiths, none of whom have the right blank. Any idea where I can get blank keys from?

Got mine from a shoe repair/key cutting market stall.

Tell 'em it's a Mazda - my local guy took one look at the key and said, "it's a Mazda, yeah?"

Worked for me!

I had a fair bit of trouble getting the right size blanks for some reason.

One phone call to to this fantastic bunch sorted it.

Just gave them my key number over the fone & got two perfect matches the in the post the next day.

There is a fact sheet on the various key types in the members area, which includes illustrations of all the blanks, so you can know what to ask for.

They are not difficult to get from key cutters on markets, franchise chains (Timpsons) through to professional locksmiths, but not everyone will have the blank in stock. Just be persistent in trying. Pro locksmiths will cut one from the key number, if required.

Most experienced Bongo hands will know where to get one locally.

defiately tell them its a mazda. Your best bet is proper car spares type place that cuts car keys and you will have no problem. Mine cost me about £3 a pop and they always have the blanks.

Thanks for all the advice. Timpsons were no help but I chanced on the people below. They tell me if you know the key number they'll send replacements by post. Very helpful - £6.50 a key.

I used the Glasgow, Argyll St branch last year for a very difficult to locate blank for a padlock key. They offered to cut one at their headquarters based on a photo I took of the key. Turnaround was a week or so but they made every effort to solve the issue. I suppose it depends who you get in the shop.

Stupid question.....where would one get the key number? Only got one key with mine and the remote central locking bit is held together with insulating tape. Not worried about getting remote locking on spare key...just need at least one spare.
