Thanks for support everyone and Mike4s request for an update. The mystery bonking is being investigated now and the engine is running sweetly!!! The cause seems to be a one in a million chance and I was saving those odds for the million pound premium bond.
I do not want to say the whole story till I know for 100% its OK. So I am afraid you will have to wait for a few more days but so far so good...........

I owned a Mazda 323 for years and now own a Ford Focus. Both have the same auto box, 4 speed with hold. My understanding of the operation is that 4th is essentially an overdrive and that pushing in the hold button disengages this. I have always assumed that the Bongo box works in a similar way.
