Won't start after fuel pump seal replacement

Post by dickandjill » Sun May 25, 2008 10:47 am

Had a go at fixing my leaking injector pump seal as per the "Replacing Fuel pump seals (with pics)" post by dandywarhol last October.
Now it wont start! Theres no fuel coming out from the injector pump at all (I've disconnected a couple of injector pipes)
It all went according to the instructions in the above post and all parts went back in the correct order. The only thing I can think of is that when removing the rear seal (having replaced the front domed cover and doing up the bolts 6 turns) I pushed the plunger in about 1/8" to give access to the seal so I could remove it. Nothing fell out but could this have dislodged something inside?
I've turned the engine over on the key for ages with jump leads from another vehicle onto the battery and it won't go.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Have you bled the system?

I believe its a self bleeding system you should just turn the engine over on the key.
At least it was when I've changed the fuel filter.

Hi
Sounds like you have a poor seal, sucking in air, dimantle and re-check all fittings,
Assembly must be done with care and cleanliness.Hope this helps

Hi Thanks for the replies.
I've removed checked and refitted the covers to check 3 times all ok
The thing is if it was sucking in some air I would expect some bubbly fuel to be exiting from the pump buy now and I'm not getting a drop from the undone injector pipes. When I removed the plates earlier there was fuel inside the pump.

You've not managed to loosen any of the wiring round the
pump have you?

I can't see anywhere thats come unplugged I did think it could be the stop solenoid thats not letting fuel through. To be honest its hard to know whats what as theres wires running everywhere. I've only got the owners manual and a copy of a parts diagram for the pump to go by.

As your got the priming pump on top of the fuel filter
if so loosen the connection at the pump end and pump
till you get clear fuel then tighten, the pump looks like
a metal wheel off a old toy car and is right on top
of the filter housing.

You can trace the wires from the stop solenoid to a multiplug above the IP. If you look at the square block where the pipes leave the IP to go to the injectors, in the middle of it is a nut, loosening it bleeds air.

Hi
Tried bleeding it as you've described and no fuel or bubbles at all. I'm quite at a loss as to what it could be
