MOT Failure on Fog Light

Post by Tombola » Wed May 21, 2008 8:08 pm

Hello all.....Bongo failed MOT today due to a problem with the fog light (Duff connection). Fixed that now and will get a retest tomorrow. However, he did say that there should be a tell-tale/warning light on the dash to show the lamp is illuminated. I can't see one on mine. Has anyone else come accross this? Or is there a lamp on the dash and mine is simple not working? Any help appreciated. Been looking in the search but to no avail....

Cheers,

Tom.

The switch itself should be illuminated when the fog is on, it won't be in the dash unless it has been retrofitted, the rear fog is not fitted as standard when manufactured as there is no requirement in Japan.

My rear fog light switch illuminates when it's switched on, is that what they mean?

Cool. Thanks for the quick response. My switch was permanently illuminated when the headlights were on. It also has front fog lights factory fitted. So quick 10 mins with the multimeter and I've rewired the swtch so it now only lights up when the fog lights (front and rear) are switched on. Phew

Glad it was only something so small to fail on.....oh, and a small hole in the exhaust that I sorted earlier. Need to get a new center section soon though!

Thanks for the quick replies.

mine didn't when I bought it, I assumed it was a relaxed inspector when it was done on import...

but I swapped my switch for a mazda 626 switch, and then wired to the dash... where I fitted a rear fog decal from a 626 clock set that I got for speedo change, so now mine illuminates like it should have done if fogs were standard.....

like this......

probably a bit more than you would want to do for the mot though

I managed to get hold of a Mazda rear fog switch which was back lit only when the dash lights come on. (irrespective of the status of the fog light).
A bit of clever wiring from the output feed with a blue led solved the problem when switched on.
Cheaper by comparison to a race horse...

You may still have a problem Tom. One of the rules is that the rear fog light must not be affected by other lamps (No, I have not the foggiest  idea why). I think this is interpreted to mean that it has to have its own switch. Good luck.

Thanks Dave...I see what you mean. It won't pass as it stands. I'll get a new switch for the rear fogs today and fit it. Can't see how it went through it's last MOT though. Must have been a "friday afternoon" one!

John...that looks very smart. Might go down that route myself at a later date.

Thanks again all.

Breakers yard is best bet for an illuminated 626 foglight switch to match the others on the dash. A mk1 MX5 one will also fit You can see the small red bulb on the front of the switch
They are a pricey £20 new!
