gear shift problem

Post by trekie » Fri May 16, 2008 10:29 pm

hi y'all,
drove into tesco car park this evening and as i pulled up and went to shift into park, it wouldnt go. eventually, after a bit of a jiggle it shifted into park but then wouldnt change out into gear.
i removed the center consul and had a look around the gear shift, i noticed at the front right-hand corner there was a linkage with a rod. when i disconnected this the gear shifted fine but when i re-connected the link, again it wouldnt budge. i disconnected the link again and drove home.
anybody got any ideas and is it safe to drive around until fixed?
what does the linkage connect to?

cheers

Can't advise (someone else will shortly I'm sure) but reckon I can reassure. I've wondered about this little item and, from what you've described, it oughtn't to be expensive to get sorted - just need 'the knowledge'. Might be just a case of adjusting something.

Good luck. Interested in this one so will watch with interest (obviously  ).

Is it the linkage that goes to the brake pedal.
Where you have to press the brake to go into drive, out of park , etc?

i have never had to put my foot on the brake pedal to change gear, maybe it has just decided to start working
when i get a chance i will re connect it and try the brake however, the cable seems to go up behind the dashboard. thanks for the advice boys.

i thought you always put your foot on the brake to put into park or drive when starting off. mine wont let you change gear unless you do the brake.
Lost without my Bongo.

Mine is just that, you need the brake on to come out of park into drive, or it will set off.

hi y'all,
thought i would give you the update. galileo and galileo2 went into drive without needing to use the brake.......until now #-o
whatever component controls this has now decided to work again. i reconnected the linkage and tried it and it wouldnt move, tried it with footbrake and still it wouldnt move #-o turned on ignition, put foot on brake and the gear shifted :!: =D> =D>
so i have learned something new

Engine doesn't need to be running - just the ignition on and the footbrake to get out of "P" No other gear needs the footbrake on.
