Flash! Ahhhhh..

Which on of you lovely people can tell me what block & colour wire is the flash main beam?
Trying to tap in some spots... no joy as yet!

Just did mine a few weks back but can't for the life of me remember the colour. Kirsty sounds right though. To be honest, I rely totally on the multimeter (a really great little purchase, v simple to use, should have got one years ago). I unplugged the block from the headlamp unit and just tested for live only when lights on main main then used that wire.

I found a Blue & White feed from the stalk, put a 10 amp in line to a spare mazy fog switch (acting as an isolator) ran to mini spots & earthed to chassis!

I now have some nice little pimp spots in the bumper like the ones Maxheadroom fitted a couple of months back... only 5mm slimmer!

Unfortunately i did blow the headlight fuse while investigating the feed with a rudimentary circuit tester.. I'm using the rear fan fuse until i can get a replacement.

Should i have used one?
I'm not really an auto electrician, i tend to work on the reverse engineering theory.
Ive used the appropriate wire, crimp connectors & shrink wrap, put a slightly lower rating fuse in just in case..
The last time i did spots on a car was an MG metro back in 1987, i used a three way back-lit rocker switch back then.. (on/off/on with main beam) i had the motor fer 8 years no probs.
This Bongos got me back into motoring again, i actually enjoy traveling these days!

There's a pearlescent look to em (which you can't see in the pic) a couple of times i've been told they where left on!

Just one question Max, how did you fit yours?

I took the grill out, but couldn't get enough access to drill the holes, i wanted to fit the bracket hanging down to make it more discrete.
I settled for using mud flap clamps, i adjusted the beam & tightened.

I'd fit a relay though jay, you are doubling the current when the lights switch on, which puts more load on the cables/switch etc....

Have you connected the bulb wires then run a common cable through, and earthed each lamp individually jay?

If so, grab a four pin relay,run the common wire from the bulbs back to terminal 87 on the relay,(incorporate your inline fuse holder,as close to the battery as possible to minimise voltage drop).Run the inline fuse cable to terminal 30 of the relay.

Connect 86 of the relay to the "acc" terminal on the switch.

Connect the "supp" connection of the switch to the blue/white wire (main beam).

Connect the final connection of the switch to "grn" (ground) to a good earth.

Now the relay will take the extra load, and the only extra load on the original wiring/switching is the feed, which is a very small current.

Screw the relay into the bulkhead somwhere you are happy is heat/waterproof.

I was going to ask you the same thing
I struggled from the front and just used the self tapping screws thay came with and screwed up into the bumper, but one week later I took the bumper off to paint the steel work behind and how easy it would have been to fit the spots.
They haven't moved (yet) so no worries.

Yes the spots are earthed individually & a common cable supplies the live, i've ordered a relay & disconnected until it arrives..
I have a spare Mazda fog switch that i'm using to isolate the spots, i didn't want hassle come MOT time!

After looking at Roosters set up & this, http://www.hilux4x4.co.za/wire_spotlights/index.php I realised i was asking for trouble with mine...

All the connections are fine (i could swing on em!) the wires didn't get hot, but my fuse did i'm upgrading to heavier duty blade style..

Once again guys thanks for your support on this one.

I was worried about going down the self tapping route in case i split the bumper!! (i wanted to drill a pilot hole).
I reinforced the top of the recess with a cleverly cut piece of mud flap in order to stop the clamp bolt cutting into & splitting the bumper it was gripping.

DRIVING LAMPS: Operate only when the car headlights are switched onto main beam and go outwhen the headlights are dipped. It is possible to fit a switch to the dashboard which which will enable you to turn the driving lights off if not required with the main beam. No seperate switch simply means that auxiliary always operate from the switch.
