Battery Charger

Post by ncmcdonald » Mon May 12, 2008 11:21 am

Hi

I'm looking at purchasing a battery charger for charging the leisure battery when at campsites. Was looking at this site http://www.bluev.co.uk/sterling-12v-6am ... -105-p.asp but didn't understand the bit that said
(due to the reverse polarity protection of this unit, a battery must be connected to the charger with a minimal charge in the battery before the charger will activate, or become a power pack)
Does this mean the battery has to be low before it will start charging. I want something that will just maintain the battery really, rather than running the battery down before it quicks in

Thanks
Manny

No this does not mean the battery has to be low before it starts charging.
What it means is that the charger has to detect the voltage of the battery it is connected to before it becomes active and starts charging. This is to protect the charger from damage from accidental shorting out (touching) of the terminals or from connecting to the battery wrong way round.

I hope this helps.

Another thing I should probably add to this is I also have a split charge relay setup so I don't know if this will effect it.

As long as you don't start the engine it should not effect it, the split charge relay should not be energised with the engine off and the two batteries will not be connected together. So make sure you connect the charger to the leisure battery.
