Engine cut out and not starting as well as it used to

Post by Mark and Ruth » Sun May 04, 2008 4:07 pm

Help!!
My wife an I took number 1 son back to Uni in Exeter from Swansea. Everything fine 70mph all the way then as we were pulling off a slip road into services, as the revs dropped the engine cut out completely. Managed to coast to safety but had a terrible time to start the engine. When it eventually started forgot about stopping and drove home ASAP at 70mph fine. I have noticed over the weeks prior to this that starting was not as easy as normal. Any ideas where to look please.

I'd start with fuel filter and especially the gauze filter under the banjo bolt on the fuel pump at the end of the fuel line. Its a tiny filter which seems to get blocked occasionally. Fiddly but easy job.

Definatley sounds like fuel starvation as Steve L suggested start by checking the fuel filters and work from there.
If I had all the money I ever spent on my Freda ............ I`d spend it on my Freda.

Thank you both I will have a look at the fuel filters as soon as the plaster is off my broken ankle (same day as Bongo broke so did I). definitely a day to forget.

I maybe wrong but if it was a filter problem bad enough to stop the engine I dont think power would come back enough to allow 70mph. Blocked is blocked. A vacuum, air or water in the system may be a possibility. Hope someone can throw more light on your problem.

Hi
I'd go with The GreatPretender on this one....I've had diesels with fuel line problems, and a car that had vacuum in the fuel tank.
As an aside, I did have one car that sounds similar, and I'm convinced it was the ECU.....it rarely had any problems, but used to do as you describe once a blue moon. It was on a Suzuki.
Cheers
