Rear Diff whine
For some time I have had a whine which has slowly gotten worse coming from the rear of the vehicle. It only happens above 50mph and is only audible when my foot is on the throttle, lift off and it goes.
I took it to a Bongo friendly garage (Ettington Garage) who believed it was either the pinion bearing (relatively cheap to fix) or inside the Diff itself (not cheap to fix).
I got him to pull the pinion bearing out yesterday and the bad news is it is fine. His rough quote is £200 labour for diff removal and refitting and whatever the diff expert charges to fix the problem (he estimates another 200).
For now I said i'd carry on driving it as it is, the whine drives me mad but its not 400 quid mad. I presume it will just slowly get worse until it dies completely or I end up rocking back and forth reciting nursery rhymes in a corner wearing my underpants on my head.

Re: Rear Diff whine
Do they do recon diff/axles. Gearbox, brake calipers, etc are available.

Good News
I spoke to Ian Taylor (the chap I bought it off) and he is going to replace it under warranty.

Re: Rear Diff whine
My Bongo has been in and had a new rear diff, new ARBs all around and new front drop links (he didn't have rear ones in and i wanted the car back). The whine has gone and it feels a lot firmer and rides a lot better at motorway speeds.
But (there's always a bloody but) when pulling away even on moderate throttle it is either spinning one (or both) of the rear wheels or making a sound a helluva like like it. On the way home from the garage I put it down to fresh damp tarmac but it's still doing it in the dry!

But no conclusions seem to be made there. Back to the dealer I guess who will lend me a car but bloody LifeSure charge 5 pound a day to insure me on it (never had this with insurance companies i have been with before). Not to mention the garage is up Stoke way and I am in redditch
oh well, I just hope its ok to tow the caravan next weekend.

Re: Rear Diff whine
It's back agt the dealer/garage who suspected a worn rubber bush on the prop shaft but it seems after having it all day that it is the replacement diff they put in. So another diff is on order and will be fitted as soon as possible.
Re: Rear Diff whine
Glad it seems to be going ok, £5.00 a day is steep, you are paying Bongo insurance as it is.

Yep, this time around I am not paying and risking third party F+t.
I phoned him yesterday and he says it is ready, he also says the new diff he sourced he thinks is a limited slip diff. All being well I will pick it up after work today.
