This is what happened to mine just before it got really bad - very little warning! I hadn't realised how bad mine was and i wrapped some tape around it to stop the clip chaffing more til igot a new hose.

The flippa hose shape has been mentioned before - A new hose from Mazda is the same size all along - no tapering, so I don't know why flippas were designed to be tapered :?

Meeks hose doesn't look anywhere near as bad as yours in the picture dandy,i'd expect a little give in a pipe so old, that has contracted and expanded so many thousand times....

But, like i said, you'd better change it anyway meek...(just in case)

To be fair dandy, i don't think meeks is bulging QUITE as much as yours does in the pic... I considered the bulge relatively normal considering the amount of times the pipe has contracted and expanded over the years, plus that turn the hose has to make, surely a bit of upward pressure is envisaged?

I'm guessing a sort of pressure releif? if the top hose has a tendency to swell over the years, perhaps the silicones were designed to eliviate that pressure by simply having a slightly oversized curvature? Just second guessing really...I'm sure flippa could enlighten us when he gets his internet sorted....

I'd still change it Big D - my new hose does not bulge at all and i can't see any good design reason for it to bulge, otherwise they'd all bulge at various points........... :?

I recon you are half way there BDC, why dont other top hoses expand there? Answer because they convect hot coolant UP TO THE RAD. Where does ours go? So that bend going down is the hottest part of the coolant system, no convection, make sense?

mine looked like that and when Dandy pointed out that it was not normal I decided to change it. mine had also got marks on it from the clip.
I didn't get round to ordering the hose - three weeks later it burst, although it was down at the other end that actual gave way.

Change it ASAP.

ive noticed that the silicone hoses are on "that auction site" anyone know which one is the top hose?

re: the oil, now that its parked on the flat ive put in 750ml to take it 2 thirds of the way between the levels. seems like quite a lot to me. no drippage from either oil or water on the floor

If i remember rightly, a full set of flippa hoses was around 90 quid. If you've got a spare bit of cash why not do the lot.

Another one that is prone to go is the rear matrix hose (near the starter), if you do em all at least it gets done in one hit, and saves having to antifreeze it all again, and bleed. When the others go.

And flippa does recommend that decent jubilee clips are used, not the ones with holes.

If you pm flippa and tell him what you want, he wont get it wrong. I had one off him early this year.

Best of luck with it
Darren.

Starting with a damn good clean eh? That flash certainly shows up the dirt!

Flippa's original set of hoses was a set of 9. I believe it has been reduced to a set of 6?

I did a bit of legwork with regards to the jubilee clips required for the job at hand... Flippa's requested the use of the best quality clips possible.

I followed the advice of a mechanic friend of mine who put me onto a place called manflex, who produce hoses, clips, braided hoses for the car tuning industry worldwide...

I persuaded them to have a kit of clips available for the application for mail order/pick up whatever. Please note, that the kit manflex put together is for the original 9 hose kit,if anybody has the measurements of the clips used for the 6 hose kit, i can forward the info to jason at manflex, who can then offer the 6 hose kit clip kit as an option.

I have the following measurements for the original 9 hose kit:

(35-50mm) 8 of.

(22-30mm) 4 of.

(17-25mm) 4 of.

(11-16) 4 of. (ammended to include 2 extra clips for extra assurance with bleed hose)

P.S. pm sent meek...
