Manual heater control panel removal

Post by chris-m » Mon Apr 21, 2008 12:51 pm

I have got a strange intermittent fault on the front heater blower motor. The fault developed about a month ago.
I usually leave the fan set to speed 1, but most of the time I start the van, I find that the fan is not running. However (and this is the strange bit), if I then set the air control to the recycle position, and then straight back again to the external air input position, it always starts running and keeps running :?:
I have taken the actual fan out and checked it, and it spins freely.
So I am guessing that the problem lies in the switch panel itself. The question is how do I remove the panel, and has anyone else had the same intermittent fault?

To remove the panel:
First disconnect the 3 control cables from their operating ends - one under the bonnet, one under & at either side of the central consul.
Insert a couple of radio removal prongs (or 2 x bits of bent wire coat-hanger) into the holes either side of the unit, lever them slightly outwards & pull the unit out.

Can't help with the intermittent fault I'm afraid.

I believe that generic ford stereo removal keys will do the job.

Have you checked the resistor under the bonnet ,its directly in the centre under the drain hole, its this hole that can cause probs with the resistor as well, make sure the drain hole is clear. underneath the plastic cover you will find the heater resistor ,two screws i think and a plug ,take it out and either use a multimeter or take apart to see if the tabs have broken loose, if they have really easy to solder back together.
