Anyone seen a nut like this!

Post by Slybacon » Tue Apr 15, 2008 9:44 pm

Please help. I'm trying to remove this nut from the end of the fuel pump - I've tried every socket I can - but the 3 flat sides are causing a real headache - A 1" almost fits, a 26mm is too big. Ahrgggg! :( I reckon I need a specialist tool but despite all my hunting around I can't find any info.

A few years ago, I bought one of those cheap sockets, with spring loaded plunger pins in them, that are meant to work on odd or worn nuts (in fact any nut smaller than the socket) - much to my mate's disgust, I was able to remove his locking wheel nuts with it     Maybe it's worth looking for one of them - I got mine off a market stall.

Thanks John.

Worth a try if I can't find the exact one for the job.

I'm still hoping that some professional mechanic may have an idea??

Cheers

These are quite good for the above odd size nuts.

Try PMing Dandywarhol as he is top dog with mechanicals (lectures on it at the local college)

It's a special tool job sly - to stop people tinkering..................

I like franco's idea though cos it won't be all that tight. :)

Found the tool I need. Only problem is supplier is in China!!

I've got 3 things to try:

1. The 1" socket almost fits - so I am going to try and heat it a little and see if I can get it on.
2. Get one of those cheapo sockets suggested by Franco
3. Get some chemical metal and try and mould a tool inside a larger socket(!)
4. Speak nicely to a kind, hardworking garage and see if they'll let me borrow/hire a socket.

The joys of motoring!

If all else fails and access permits - you could try grinding the round sides flat(ish) or better still use a plumbers basin wrench - http://www.samstagsales.com/vbw/images/vbw149005x.jpg

Hi
I like the thinking, Fred....another technique my father taught me was to drill a small hole near the edge , and drift the thing round with a centre-punch, keeping the centre-pop at a tangent all the way as you hit it

If you can get access a Stilson wrench will turn it or a pair of the curved jaw Molegrips.

Tee hee. I'm sorry - just stopped giggling at this one. Whatever you do dude, DON'T WRECK IT as the cost of a new diesel injector could make your eyes water. But seriously - good luck 8)

No idea what it was called, but it only cost about a quid and has been worth much more than that. I really didn't think it would work but it worked a treat on anything except really small nuts/bolts - just wish I knew where it was now :(
