Loss of Power only at high speeds

Post by escotb » Mon Apr 07, 2008 9:58 pm

Hi there everyone,

I've had a good look through and there has been one slightly similar case but not exactly the same, so thought I would post our babies complains and see if anyone can come to her rescue.

She looses power suddenly only after going 70-80 mph for a while. Sudden jerking loss of power accompanied by white smoke. If speed is reduced she will go along better (50-60 mph). But sometimes problem gets so bad she comes to a complete stand still. But only happens after going fast. We drove for 2 weeks around Pyrennes and up and down hill (obviously!) and off road with no problems at all. It's also definitely worse with a low tank and better after being filled up.

We've had filter changed but hasn't made any difference.

She's a manual 2.5 turbo diesel.

Hope someone can help.

Emily

i had something similar once on a nissan diesel and it was the diesel injectors that needed either a good clean or replacing - i had them replaced and all was well - not sure if its the same on the bongo though ?

Hundreds of years ago (or so it feels) I had a motor bike that did that! It was the petrol tank breather blocked. If the air can't get in the fuel can't get out. Just a thought :)

good one Aethelric - has it been undersealed recently :?: - if the breather pipe's blocked it would cause problems.

I sometimes hear a hiss (taking in of air) when opening the fuel cap, but never had any problems running.

You only forget once to open the breather on an outboard motor, when in the middle of a loch, with the winds getting up!!

Make sure to put the cap back, with the bongo fuel consumption you can suck passers by into the tank.
