grating sound

Post by bighairypict » Tue Apr 01, 2008 12:57 am

does anyone have any idea about the grating sound I hear from behind the driver's seat when I brake (sometimes also when I accelerate but mostly under hard braking)?

grating noise

Post by helen&tony » Tue Apr 01, 2008 4:16 am

Hi
I notice that noises behind the driver's seat are often further aft than you think.....could it be discs needing skimming, or pads?
Cheers
Helen
In the beginning there was nothing , then God said "Let there be Light".....There was still nothing , but ,by crikey, you could see it better.

Unless a mouse with a cheese grater has moved in to your bongo, it could well be a brake problem. If a pad is very worn or gone, you could get a grating noise of metal on the brake disc. This happened on my toyota estima -- although the pads were not overly worn, one came loose from the metal holder that the pad is stuck to, and fell off. The brake caliper then did not retract properly (the piston wasn't designed to come so far out), and it scraped for a while on acceleration too. Easy to check.

The brake compound material can disintegrate into pieces on occasions if the pad thickness gets very thin , i have had this scenario in the past, where upon pad removal, the actual pad falls to the floor in numerous pieces, leaving just the backing plate in situ!

Often, the brakes will start to squeal before the pad thickness gets dangerously low, not all varieties do this however.
