unidentified noise!

Post by alectroll » Thu Mar 27, 2008 12:09 pm

Right here we go again, Deep Breath!!! When i get to 65-70mph i get a noise which i can only liken to driving over the rumble strip at the side of the road or listening to my neighbour using a hammer drill on the other side of the wall (as he tends to do quite often to my annoyance!!!!) The noise disappears if i let off the throttle or if i accelerate, spoke to the local garage and he reckons its a whell bearing on its way out. Is this correct or is he just trying to get yet more money out of me, advice please!!

Sounds like either the all too regular problem with wheel balance....many (most?) bongos do this at some time.

Get the tracking done too while you're there, cheapest things to check first  Between -1 to 7mm toe in I think, the dodgy translation from the Japanese manual seems to have caused some confusion by being read as 1.7mm, not that it makes a huge difference as that figure is within range. Some argue for setting them parallel, which again is still within range. :D

ust admit it doesn't sound especially like wheel imbalance to me but I guess it can take several forms (I only ever notice the sort that manifests itself as shaking on the steering wheel - always at 65-70 mph, weird!)

Yeah it does Mike. Mine's always done it at about 80mph. It's not so bad with the new tyres, wheel balance and tracking but still there.

If that doesn't alter it...then get the joints/bearings checked on your propshafts..

I had a noise a bit like that a while back and the problem was that the two front tyres had flat spots, more than one. If fact the tyre was more like a fifty pence piece. It was also noticable, (but not half as loud) with the windows down and travelling at a slow speed.

There is a lesson to be learned here, don't use 50p pieces for tyres

Not that you ever Do stray over 70 of course though dave.....

Electroll? Do you have aftermarket alloys fitted? Are any of the spigot rings missing/squashed etc...?

Does wheel rotation make any difference, or are you running different sized tyres front to rear?

Ha!, some of you have done what i have, i get the shaking on the steering wheel at 65-70mph. Went through all the motions as you do, balancing, tracking. Shake is still there slightly, but not as bad as when i first got it.

A new tyre seemed to shut it up a bit, ive got marshall on the front, and continental vancos on the back. The tyre that was causing all the severe shaking was "egg shaped" as the tyre fitter said.

It's a shame that it shakes at 70, seems like a common thing
