Loss of power and black smoke

Post by Responder59 » Sat Mar 22, 2008 10:43 pm

After a month standing on the drive 'er indoors suggested we take
Bongopanzer out for a spin today. On start up there was a low moaning sound (from Bongo not 'er indoors!) This was clearly engine related as it changed pitch with throttle changes.

After a couple of miles while climbing a hill the vehicle lost power and black smoke poured out of the tail pipe. After a 10 minute stop we got going again, no more black smoke. Put in a half tank of Shell diesel
and Bongo seems OK now but a very faint moaning sound discernable rising and falling in pitch with throttle movement.

A possible diagnosis dear Bongodoc would be greatly appreciated.

regards,
Steve

Hi Heather,
Don't think it's glow plugs as start up was ok. Smokin' started after couple of miles running.

Mice nesting in your air filter  Check your air inlet isn't blocked anywhere.
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Is it the dreaded EGR and/or or the cold start facility some Bongos have. Read up on here but getting the EGR blanked off may effect a cure. Possibly standing around for a while has allowed the gunge to take control

The black smoke turns out to be due to the cold start system being inadvertantly switched on (Bongo gremlin?) and the moaning sound to low power steering fluid So, alls well that ends well!
