The electrics on my bongo appear to be a little muddled up, with lots of wires hanging down by the foot pedals!!! Whilst looking over it I found a Black box 8 x 5 inch cable tied to a bar behind the steering wheel / dash.
The black box has a set of 6 wires coming out the box which do not go anywhere. two of these wires passed through the front of the van toward the battery and have hose shoe connectors at the end (but not connected). The box also has various other connection that appear to connect to the vans main wiring.
The box and 6 unattched wires appear to be not original (i.e. they look newer then 1996).
The box says something along the lines off ' Warning - iif manual vehicle, attach the green wire to the handbrake'.
Any ideas?
Black electrical box behind the steering wheel ?!

I'm with weston on this one. Sounds like an aftermarket immobiliser / alarm. I don't think early Bongos came with immobilizers but I'm sure someone will coreect me if I'm wrong.
I was with Weston but just did a google for "warning if manual vehicle green wire handbrake" and now I think is probably a turbo timer / remote start device. Also, 8" x 5" sounds quite large for an alarm / immobiliser.

The below would back that up as it is possible to start a manual in geardreamwarrioruk wrote:could be a remote start unit with it requiring a connection to the handbrake. it looks like its a unit that requires the handbrake on to operate, but most probably an aftermarket addon.
so the interlink to the handbrake would be necessary to stop it setting off without you.' Warning - if manual vehicle, attach the green wire to the handbrake'.
As an auto can only be started in P or N the same interlink isn't necessary as it already exists
