Overheating.Not the head gasket - Thankfully. But what next?

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Have had my bongo around 2 weeks now. Have drove it around 300 miles driving it from place of purchase to home. No problems.

However, took it 3 miles today and the temp guage is reading near on max and the coolant expansion tank (header tank?) is bubbling and very hot with some overflow of liquid out of the tank.

TFist thought was haed gasket so ook it straight to the garage to get it checked, Thankfully it isn't the head gasket.

Any ideas what I can start checking now....whilst I have time over Easter!?

could be restricted flow in rad or stuck thermostat

Could be just a case of air in the system

could be a leak from a hose

Questions
Have you driven it since getting it home? ie between the journey and this incident?

was it from a dealer?

when its cold does it start ok any white smoke?

any coolant loss between overnight?

- Van has been driven onece or twic. ny around 5 miles each time.

- The van was bought privately. The exhaust also 'went' on the way home meaning I ha to relace the back box and centre pipe!!

- It seems to start fine (takes around 3 seconds but always starts on 1st turn of the key) and there is no white smoke.

I am thinking the first theing to do is check there is no air in the system by draining the system although I have no manual so am not sure as of yet how to go abut doing this!

There is a fact sheet in the members area though there is no need to drain the entire system to check for air just bleed it as per the fact sheet

Could really do with pages 40 - 41 from the manual but will see how I get on.

Did the garage do a test in the header tank to see if exaust gases are present??
Can you smell any in there??
Bubbles in the tank can be very bad news.

Haydn Callow - Yes, they tested the header tank for gases. Non present so they therfore said it isnt the head gasket. Its booked in next week but the garage has not had much experience of bongos.

It may be an idea to relay the bleed procedure to the garage that is looking after your bongo, some dilligence will be required,the bongo is a fussy beast! :shock:

It may be an idea to drop the coolant entirely, as it should be changed bi-annually anyway,see if the mechanic can reverse flush the rad too as a precaution.... :wink:

That'll be biennially BDC - every 2 years, not twice a year :wink:
