Squealing sound for 1/2 mile when warm

Help Fellow bongoliers..

After reading the forum for hours and learning a hell of a lot i need your help.


My dear bongo makes a noise like a squealing / slipping belt for about 1/2 mile from setting off then everything is back to normal. This very rarely happens from cold but always when warm and parked up for about 15 mins or more.

I have changed both alternator belts and air con belt. Cambelt was done at 97km. All gears change perfectly normally. And it goes after about 1/2 mile and does not return unless stood for a we while again.

I have had the exhaust manifold bolts checked and all are ok as this seems common and i have no hold light flashing. if i just start and rev the engine it does not do it and it goes above what i think is 3rd gear.
hope you can shed some light
she is 2.5TD Auto Freetop 4WD and has done 107000km oil changed very regularly as recommended.

Hi corrour, interesting that the squealing isn't apparent on a cold start.... It sounds for the life of me like the old number one manifold stud issue...

Perhaps the manifold is warped? If this is the case,the manifold will need to be removed, and skimmed flat, i'd suggest fitting a new gasket,and all new manifold studs for peace of mind....

Have you tried the feather/tissue trick around the gasket area when starting from cold to check for leaks?

or washing up liquid, then it smells nice too when it starts to dry as it evaporates with the heat

After removing the head shield and a closer look in daylight.

You the wise ones are right low and behold top half of number one stud missing in action.

No leak when cold and only slight when hot.
Will have to be done but is it an urgent job ?
as i only get sound for 1/2 mile.
Is It best to renew gasket at same time?

Got a right earholing for pinching washing up liquid

Don't worry too much about using the van...it doesn't seem to effect performance or do any damage..but the noise is ruddy aggrevating isn't it?

Just get it sorted when you can.
