New steering wheel

Post by kloonsy » Mon Mar 03, 2008 8:43 pm

Has anyone fitted a replacement wheel to an airbag equipped Bongo/Freda? Apart from the obvious deleting of a safety item, what boss fits? MX5? Not being a fan of sitting behind an explosive device, and considering my wheel is tatty and worn just wondered if anyone had any tips on swapping?

Yes i've done this, the boss that tinny ford has showen is the same as mine.

You need to disconect the battery and leave it for 30 mins (at least).

Then you can remove the airbag from the wheel carefully.

Then undo the big centre nut but not all the way cuz the wheel can be jammed and need some pulling or hitting to get it off.

Once the wheel is off you will have a clock spring showing, disconnect it and remove. It gets in the way.

The wire on its own is the live to the horn. You will have to be inventive to be able to connect this via a brush to the bottom of the boss.(i used a switch like the one that turns on the light when you open a door.')

You could always fit a horn button somewhere else but i wanted to use the steering wheel one.

For anybody considering removal of the airbag(s), please be aware that the airbag actually is considered as an explosive device, and is therefore NOT recommended to store the airbag under the stairs/in the shed or wherever....

Contact your local recycling centre for advise of disposal (not the police).
