Cutting out, rough idling and loss of power

Post by Starbangledspanner » Wed Feb 20, 2008 1:54 pm

Twice my '97 2.5 diesel Freda has cut out after a long trip but always eventually restarted and drove fine.
Just Yesterday 'er indoors is taking No.1 sprogg to school and the engine cut out on her several times, even whilst driving. It restarted but ran rough and didn't have the usual power.
Today it was my turn to take No.1 and she started and ran fine for the journey to school and back but she finishes at 11:30. So I picked her up and the outward journey was fine but the return was marked by rough idling and no power when I put my foot down. The revs went up but no increase in speed. It never cut out on me but the old girl is not happy.
Any thoughts as to where to start looking?
I did check the banjo filter a little while back and it was spotless.
Regards

Sounds like fuel starvation and/or a leak in the air intake system. Try searching the forum for remedies as it isn't the first time that this has cropped up. Have you done or had any work done to it recently? When were the filters last changed?

I tried searching but obviously searched for the wrong words.
It is due it's first service since I bought it last year so filters and stuff to be checked. It has had no work done. Just flew past it's MOT no trouble. Doesn't get much use at the moment, just the school run twice a week at most and was fine when last used.

BF member Harry had this problem recently. I know he got the O rings done on the injector/pump, can't remember what else but try a Search as this kind of thing has happened before.

Good luck - keep us posted 8)

Thank you gentlemen, I think I've found the info necessary. Looks like a trip to our Bongo friendly garage in Wisbech as my hands are way to big and I have an aversion to spilling my own blood.
Will report on results.

that is exactly what ours was doing....
Replaced the injector pump seals (see dandywarhol's post on leaky pump) and now back to happiness...... and fuel economy returned to usual.....

Good luck

Anyone know part numbers for these seals as my garage is having difficulty locating them?

Thank you kindly for that.
Apparently when I booked the motor in for the seals I spoke to the girl on the desk and said I need my pump seals changed. When I dropped it off tonight they said there were about 40 seals in there, which ones were the ones? Fortunately I had the definitive Dandywarhol guide to pump seal changing all printed out and gave it to the boss and also gave them the number of Lawson Diesel to ring.
Hopefully now I shall get the old girl back tomorrow at her sprightly best.

When I had mine done a few weeks ago I was sent to my local diesel specialists with an old seal (oink oink)

They didn't know what a bongo was but when I said it was the same as a Ford Ranger engine they said no probs...they are always going,,,and produced a drawful of the correct seals.

good luck

Sorry it's taken so long but with all the holidays to use up and staff leaving, I haven't been home in a while.

So £280 and some pennies later we have our Freda back.

They replaced the seals in the pump even though they said there was nothing wrong with the old ones.

They did however find a leaky manifold gasket which they replaced. Whilst moving the motor she cut out again and this time they found the fuel filter blocked (it was on my to do list) so they changed that. And finally they put through some cleaning stuff for diesels that drops all them nasty emissions.

Drove her later and she was so much better. Hopefully the fuel consuption will improve too now.

Thanks for all your help previously guys.
