Cooling fans

Does anyone know how to test the fans to see if they are working properly?
I have not heard them kicking in for a long time, and have just had new head fitted etc.

Would it also be worth getting the fan sensors replaced?, Cos im still going through a process of elimination on the cooling side.

Before my head went i heard the scavenger fans working, obviously was very hot to make them come on. But now not a sausage!.

Temperature gauge is at 11 o clock, but is a bit smoky and chuggy on start up.

The actual cooling fan operation can simply be checked by turning on the a/c, otherwise the sendor is a 2 terminal one on the head under the driver's seat - about midway along the head if I remember correctly.

Hi
The sensor for the scavenger fan is that little black device by the handbrake with 2 wires going to it . You'll see it if you remove the handbrake console. Lift the drivers seat, and you will see the sensor poking down into the engine bay. I think that if you unclip the plug from the sensor, you can short the connections in the plug with a bit of wire to make the fan work. The fan only works when the engine is very hot....most people find it hardly ever switches on

It'd be an interesting mod to provide it with a manual over-ride. Gives it some exercise, checks it is still OK (sensor apart), and even on an averagely hot day there are times when I wouldn't mind cooling the radiator next ot me (at other times it's lovely and cosy) :roll:

On the list it goes 8)

Just put a switch in place of the sensor on top of the engine cover - you could fit it on the centre consule. You could even go the full bling and have a blue LED in it :wink:

Seriously, thats not a bad idea mike,the manual overide is a nice touch,even if its just to test the fan every now and again.

..and should be so simple. Why didn't we think of it before. Still keep the sensor control, just have a rocker switch for over-ride. Put it on the dash next to the rear fan switch control in the blank there. will I ever get out again - aaaarrrrggghhhh :?

And when you're stuck in traffic in the summer, would also be an advantage.

Cos if these fans only come on when it is red hot, the damage is being done to the rest of it in the meantime. Manual override and keeping sensor, sounds like a good plan 8)

And just think you might be doing your Bongo a great favour,and extending component life maybe.

Another job for it this year methinks.

Not only could you fit a switch with an led, you could fit a buzzer so you could hear when it is energised. :wink:


If the motor was seized/burnt/worn out , there would be know way of knowing if it were actually working without having a look. The fuse may still be ok.

Can it be heard running from the cab :?:

I think you guys should apply for design engineers jobs with Mazda cos it's obvious that the current designers have no idea what parameters to set sensors to.................... 8) :lol:

Oh yes they did. Tokyo parameters. Only we don't get Tokyo parameters here and don't like getting even a little bit hot. Anyway, it's another gadget/switch to add to the growing array - love it :lol: :lol: :lol:
