Fog ? lamps

Post by Leah&John » Mon Feb 18, 2008 9:37 pm

Its been a touch foggy here of late - we note that the factory fitted 'fog' lamps are, in a word, useless in fog. Are they in fact driving lamps and if so is there an upgrade that could be performed? - I'm thinking bulbs rather than extra spots.

If they are mounted in the holes low down on the front, they are foglights and are best used without headlamps, to cut the glare being thrown back at you. What do you mean by useless? - they are not meant to light the road way ahead of you, but to light the centre white line and kerbs, so that you can safely stay on the road.

Can't say I've ever had fog lights that have helped much in fog - except on twisty singletrack roads where they do let you see the verge a bit better. Most useful in falling snow in my experience, where they really do help. But the Bongo ones are fitted so that they collect the snow rather rapidly & lose their effectiveness :( .

I think the bumper mounted fogs are more of a "to be seen" lamp, than a "see more of the road" lamp. The lens is designed to spread out the light as much as possible, to reduce the "glare back" scenario as john pointed out.

The bulbs can be uprated/changed.

I think it would make a difference with "all weather" bulbs fitted. I have those in mine.

Well the bottom ones are halogen ( not factory fitted) white light lamps
The top ones ( round) are yellow tinted factory fitted?

My van came with these fitted when I bought it from the dealers
I drive through country ( unlit) lanes each day to a large airfield they have been used frequently.

Great lights

I must get round to testing out mine and sorting out which button is which. I have fogs on the bullbars and the stupid sticky out one tat hasn't been knowcked off yet at the back. I assume the original button is for the back one and the funny little round button is for the bullbar ones. I still cant see why they haven't used a spare button though as I have about 4!

There has been a fair bit of fog around here of late, so mine have seen some use.

I have had some queries over the "all weather" type bulbs fitted to my bongo, (all weather bulbs in headlamps, all weather lenses on my fogs)

I took a few snaps to highlight the differences between white bulbs, and the all weather type...

All weather fogs....

me too, Mr H. The usual reaction is that they just wave back

fog lamps are really no use unless it is so foggy you can only travel at less than 35MPH - any faster and you shouldn't be looking at the bit of the road they light up

in any other conditions they only help to put too much light in the eyes of oncoming traffic :x
