Windscreen Replacement Question

Post by world_in_motion » Fri Feb 22, 2008 12:17 pm

Hi, Long time since I was on this forum, but I was wondering if anyone out there had ever had their windscreen replaced by Autoglass?
I need mine replacing, and they tell me that I have a choice of a green, bronze or blue tint. I haven't noticed any tint on my windscreen, so I called 321-Away to ask their opinion, and they said as far as they were aware all the windscreens they supply were clear.
I called Autoglass back to ensure they had the correct details, and to ask them where they source their parts from. She assured me the windscreen was for a Mazda Bongo, but could only tell me that it came form their "main distribution centre".
I was told that the tint would hardly be noticeable, but am still a little wary.
Anybody else experienced this?
Thanks for any advice.
Jim

I don't think so Brora, they are probably referring to the very slight tint that on some makes of van runs throughout the glass in both windscreen and side windows. Toyota vans tend to be like this. You get a grey or brown or blue tint depending on the colour of paintwork. I have to say I wasn't aware of a tint to Bongo windscreens so share Jim's trepidation. I would be inclined to take the Bongo into Autoglass and let them decide. If they order the wrong windscreen the fault is then theirs and not yours.

Just tell them you expect 'like for like' or near as damn it or reserve the right to reject?

Thanks, for your replies so far. A question for Dandywarhol re: your reply... Do you mean your windscreen came from / was fitted by Autoglass?
Cheers

I had a passenger side door glass and quarter light fitted by autoglass and it was only after they had been broken and I saw the bits in the footwell that I relised mine had a green tint. Don't know if this helps but get them to make the decision as others have said then it is their mistake.
Be nice to everyone they might be nice back.

Hi world in motion, i have no experience of autoglass i'm afraid, but there will be an overall slight tint to your windscreen.

As a tip, have a look at the raindrops on your glazing, i know it sounds weird, but its easier to determine what tint the glass has by looking at the colour of the raindrops, as opposed to the actual glass! (especially if the sun is trying to break through)

I think the refraction of light through the raindrops exaggerates the slight tint.

Hang on... i think there is a bunch of white coat wearing blokes knocking at my front door.

The new screen on my bongo isn't actually a genuine "mazda" item, the overall tint is green, with a blue/green top tint.

Mine is the green bongo to the right, the middle bongo(blobber's) has a mazda original screen (with top tint) my previous screen was the same as the bongo on the left (snowkiters).

My spurious screen has a slightly deeper, different coloured tint to blobber's...

The silver bongo will have a bronze overall tint, both green bongo's will be blue/green.

Hi had mine done this week by autoglass, bloody good job they did too, unless you have a very obvious gold tint the screen should be classed as green tint, although it seems clear, my bongalow is body colour green so the screen is supposed to match but the green tint is not obvious sooo. I would go for the green. Only cost me £60.00 and got a £20. wine voucher too.
