V6 engine, is it used in any other vehicle?

Post by timhum » Sat Feb 02, 2008 5:46 pm

The title says it all really, this is a follow on to the tappet query. If the engine is used elsewhere, it will be another avenue to follow to get info about the engine generally.
I haven't looked but is the petrol engine covered in the workshop manual?
Questions, questions,
Cheers,
Tim

Is it not in the Mazda Xedos as well?
Dabs

If it is the same engine have a look here as noisy tappets are mentioned but only on startup!!!

Xedos 6 had a 2 litre engine. Xedos 9 has a 2.5 V6, but different spec.

Hi Tim,

If you are having probs may be worthwhile giving someone like Gerry at discount trucks a call. He has an excellent mechanic called Fred. He's worked on mine and he really seems to know his stuff.

Recently had a couple of things sorted on mine and the price they charged was very good considering the time they spent.

I've not managed to find a manual that covers mine, the simple stuff like servicing items seems straightforward but I have to agree if something else started to play up it would be hard to find detailed information.

Good luck anyway, hopefully it won't be anything dramatic.

There's also Lakeside garage, probably much nearer to you.

Keep us posted.

Hi Tim, doing a spot of research before the new purchase eh?

The v6 petrol bongo engine is known as the J5-DE, which is a DOHC, four valve per cylinder unit producing 159 bhp (119kw) @ 6000rpm with a respective 211nm of torque at 3500RPM,from a relatively low compression ratio of 9:1.

This is quite an uncommon powerplant, yet reknown for its reliability, some screw type supercharger units have been used in some new zealand/australian race series cars. (mazda 929,/efini MS-9).

Hmm....supercharger!

I've heard it mentioned in the past that the V6 bongo has the same engine as the ford probe, this isn't the case, the ford probe was basically a mazda mx-6 with a different bodyshell, the mx-6 had the K series engine fitted. Nor is the bongo V6 engine the 24v duratec unit as used in the mondeo/cougar (again i have heard dealers suggest this).

Spot on Ste,
Prompted by an enquiry regarding tappets. Anyhow, I am delighted that it is regarded as reliable. Also I am looking to get it converted to LPG soon after buying to get the best value out of the conversion.
Cheers,
Tim
