auto box not holding on junctions and hills
For some reason, our freda seems to have stopped holding on inclines. Just noticed it today, but otherwise seems fine. Anyone any ideas before i fit a manual box?

Are you referring to the "HOLD" facility, via the button on the selector Kloonsy?
Have a look for the plug under the centre console, these have been known to work loose, and seperate in the past, you'll probably find that the illumination for the gear selector strip isn't working either...

I have used quite a few different bongos as daily drivers, and this is one thing I think they lack compared to other autos that I have driven. i.e they dont hold that well on a decent incline and I normally feel the need to do a normal hill start - you know...... quickly off the brake, roll back an inch or so just to scare the guy behind you and then get on the gas asap
.
No bdc, i mean the way it used to keep stationary at junctions and hill startsbigdaddycain wrote:Are you referring to the "HOLD" facility, via the button on the selector Kloonsy?

I see Kloonsy,i must have read it wrong....kloonsy wrote:No bdc, i mean the way it used to keep stationary at junctions and hill startsbigdaddycain wrote:Are you referring to the "HOLD" facility, via the button on the selector Kloonsy?

Granted, the bongo doesn't hold too well on an incline compared to other autos i've driven in the past...But then again, i dont think i've had an auto car that weighs quite so much.
If i feel a bit of backward creeping when stationary on an incline,i simply balance the release of the hanbrake,to the amount of forward drive applied,a reasonable balance can be achieved.

Perhaps mike, but i feel that a gradual deterioration would not be present, i think you either get full hydraulics, or none at all, auto boxes are quite precise things.mikeonb4c wrote:Does condition/viscosity of the auto transmission fluid have any bearing on this?

Make sure you have not got a leak in the Torque Coverter, or if its just generally low on oil.
If the oil level is down in it, it can also cause a similar action, 'Will not hold unless revs are up'
I am not 100%, but can someone answer if the torque converter is fed from the box, or does it have it's own oil?

The torque convertor is supplies with oil from the gearbox by a pump at the front of the 'box. The level would need to be pretty low to affect the drive but it's worth checking. also, the 'box won't hold so well on onclines if the "HOLD" button is on when you're stationary as the 'box has selected 2nd in that mode.
