Hi

I've been trying to work out mpg for my van and kept a log of miles done, fuel used etc.

Problem is I can't decide if speedo counter is Km or M.!! (Speed is Mph)

I know for a fact that trip to work is 4.2 miles.... but Bongo says 5.1 on speedo. That doesn't work out for miles or Km.

Infact when I worked out fuel economy against a Km reading it's 19.2mpg.

....but against Miles its just under 30. Hmmmm :?:

Either of those figures could be right for miles per gallon, depending on what kind of driving you're doing. On longish runs I get 30-32mpg, but if I use the van for commuting - 4 miles each way, then it drops to around 19 mpg.

You probably need to compare figures on longer runs to confirm, but I'd suspect the odometer is running in km - unless you know the speedo has been converted by having a chip added.

If the speedo has been converted by using a chip, it will read up to 180 mph, but if it has been converted by using a different face it will read up to a lot less (140 mph, I think). If a chip has been used, the odometer will read in miles, but if the face has been changed it will still read in kms.

When I check my mpg, I usually fill up, note the odometer reading, run it until the fuel gauge reads less than a quarter full, then fill up again noting how much it takes. That way gives a good average over a period of time and different driving conditions. I get about 25 mpg on average this way.

a chipped speedo will only have one set of numbers up to 180 m/km.
A new face will have 2 sets showing 110 mph on the outside and 180 km on the inside and will still show the odometer in kms

A speedo out of a mx6 or 626 will show 140 mph and the odometer will be in miles
