Reversing Sensors and Camera

Post by Coolhand » Sat Jan 19, 2008 11:49 am

I am thinking of fitting one of the many Reversing Sensor kits that are sold on Ebay. They look pretty staight forward but is there anything I should look out for?

Also has anyone fitted a reversing camera, I have just fitted a Beat 500 DVD player which has all the connections for one so I might go down this route.

I was thinking of this one because it is wireless, I take it it is wired up at the back and the display picks up the wireless signals. Is the display hard wired or does it plug into the lighter socket. Where abouts have you mounted the display.

How do you get on with the sensor beeps and the Bongo reversing beeps?

The display picks up the wireless signals from the control box which I have behind the rear driver side panel. I wired the control box to the reversing light cluster - scotchlok connector to tap it. The dislay sits in the cubby above the radio and comes with a ciggie connector which I am using. I could hard wire it and might do so because occasionally it gives a little chirp as I drive along which I suspect is the ciggie connector sometimes losing contact.

What I really appreciate is the wealth of info on the display - graduated line of flashing dots indicating side object - actual distance shown changing as you reverse - audible beeps increasing in speed with proximity.

I fitted one and its a mixed bag - I did it in the hope of removing the rear mirror which I dont like the look of - the view behind is great but its really hard to judge distances - I find myself using the rear mirror!! I ran a video and power lead from back to front - following the fog light wire out into the bumper - which was easy as i'm in the middle of a side conversion. Power lead connected to reversing light and it auto switches my head unit.

I guess the best place for a camera is looking down from the spoiler - that way you could see the bumper and van extremities... A job for the summer...

Do these cameras have a self cleaning lense, as the rear end of our Bongo constantly needs cleaning
