Cam belt change hint that may work.

Post by Ian Milne » Sat Jan 12, 2008 4:21 am

First up, Merry New Year.
Second, I'm not a member but hopefully as I have read through your site, I not only find it interesting (grease grease) but it doesn't really answer my problem. (don't worry, I am a problem, my Mum told me so.)
In exchange for help on my problem I can offer some info which may be of help to you guys.
As to the problem of the glow plug light in the dash pulsing, on and off. I've had this problem, particularly going up long step hills (the spiral in the center of the North Island (on bugger, I've just let the cat out of the bag, YES I'm a Kiwi.) gaining over 400ft in altitude. I found the fix for this as it appeared to shut the turbo down. You're right about EMU / ECU, what I call 'pea brain', the computer' gets a 'latched' message about something?? What I've found is, I've got to stop, shut the engine down, then turn the ignition key to the engine 'run' posn. (not start), then open the bonnet, and gain access to the relay/fuse box between the interior fan/blower and the radiator, open it and pull out the green relay, (you'll hear a click from a relay? over behing the battery), refit the green relay, close the bonnet, get behind the wheel, start the engine and carry on your way, sorted - untill you come to the next hill, going up.
Next is the cam belt, to maintain the timing etc., whilst the old belt is still in position, try this. Start to cut the old cam belt, length wise, rotating the engine as you do it, so that you end up with two 'cam' belts. Then cut one of these cam belts off and slide the new belt on and then cut the remaining 'half' belt off and slide the new one on the rest of the way.

Done that one, again on a Pinto engine - cut the belt as the engine was idling - takes less time

Haven't got the guts to do it on the Bongo though :?
