Quote for new Starter Motor

Post by Biddy » Fri Jan 11, 2008 10:57 am

Please forgive me if I am upsetting any member as there is a reasonable in house scheme but......

http://www.alternatormart.co.uk/ these people have quoted me £109 + VAT post free 100% new unit made to Manufactures Specs and they also offf the brushes, regulators etc bits (I'd have to ask my Dad but I'm sure you know)

I hope it's ok as I will go for it as its the best price new one I've found...

Any thoughts... oh! the part no. might be ST5027 as they say quote this on order :D

Are you sure you need a new starter motor? The most common problem with Bongo starters seems to be worn solenoid contacts, which can be replace quite easily for less than £20.

Price seems good. Provided you were able to keep your old motor, you culd replace for now then try out moonshines (excellent) repair tricks one the old one and - if they are successful - flog it on ebay and recover some cost. 8)

Hi Biddy,

you have the classic symptoms of burnt solenoid contacts. What happens when you turn the key is that the solenoid pulls in, which makes a click. It's supposed to hit two brass contacts at the end of its stroke, and connect the two together. This then allows current to flow to the motor itself, which then turns the engine over. If these contacts are burnt, they don't connect properly so you have to keep trying until they do. Sometimes they will connect second try, sometimes it takes many tries before they eventually connect and turn the starter motor.

As you rightly say, it makes no difference whether the engine is hot or cold. It's purely a matter of luck whether the contacts connect first time that you turn the key, or 21st time.

What Mike says sounds like a good idea.

you will have 2 batteries in parallel under the bonnet, and a switch in the cab with a pic of an engine on it with a zig zag in the middle.
