news to me too until i read Torchwood's 40mpg thread. it's the Exhaust Recirculation Valve. Required in Japan, but not here. lots of info on it here, but i can't seem to find anything about it's location

If you do a search on "EGR" loads of threads will turn up.

And lots of pictures in some of them.

cheers Scanner, did a search for EGR this time instead of exhaust recirculation valve. much more fruitful!

Nope, that's an engine heater.

EGR is on the engine itself (and before the exhaust system) it recycles a proportion of the exhaust gases straight back from the exhaust manifold to the inlet manifold to reduce (allegedly) combustion temps and thus reduce the production of NOX.

The main problem with the EGR system is that its efficiency is questionable as time goes by...

Mine was fine, but i decided to ditch the entire system (just in case) using Nick Skidmore's EGR blanking/removal kit.

The engine is now a little more responsive, and i dont have to worry about the valve in the EGR sticking open now...

It certainly hasn't adversely affected the emissions.
