Is yours a petrol car? If so, it's from the catalytic converter.

If you've got a manual gearbox I'd suggest the clutch slipping/burning out?

But tends to smell of burnt cabbage.....I get that prob every time I drive a manual these days.

No cat fitted on a diesel, the smell is probably from a car in front, who's cat is not yet up to temperature. As you pull away you drive into the smell. Or one of the kids keeps letting off stink bombs.

Welcome aboard.

Sounds daft, but it's not the windscreen washer fluid is it? I've had a horrendous whiff from cars in the past, not sure it its different wash fluids mixing or going off, but remedied with a bl**dy good rinse out & dose of Miltons sterilizing fluid.

Might be a good idea to put a voltmeter across the battery(ies) when the engines running. Look for the vehicle battery venting maybe.

I've smelt the same stink when a battery was "cookin'".
